Vehicle Detail

ONLY 5,483 OF THESE CARS WERE PRODUCED!!! United States civilian car production stopped in the spring of 1942, already many woodie wagons were being diverted for use overseas. Earlier, Ford of Canada had already made right-hand drive woodies for use in war-torn Great Britain. To fulfill continuing demand, some pre-war sedans were rebodied as wood-clad wagons by specialist firms.Famed industrial designer Brooks Stevens created the Monart Motors "Carry-all" conversion using 1942 Ford and Mercury sedans from the government motor pool. These specially adapted vehicles could be configured to carry three stretchers and three passengers or 13 passengers, including the driver. The J.T. Cantrell Company of Huntington, Long Island did contract work for the War Department. Due to a shortage of automobiles during this period, this often meant converting sedans into station wagons. The car would be cut in two, the frame and driveshaft extended and strengthened, and wood built into the sectioned area. These "altered sedans", used by the Armed Forces, were seen in all theaters of the war. One, painted battleship gray, was shipped to the Pacific where it was used in the battle for the Caroline Islands. The real boom in woodies was after the war - a result of war-related scarcity. Vehicles were under price-controls and the selling price was capped at pre-war prices. A newly rebodied vehicle was exempt, allowing dealers to sell the remanufactured wagons at whatever price the market would bear. At the peak, J.T. Cantrell was running three shifts.Despite the fact that car models were unchanged immediately after the war, the ready availability of wood lead some manufacturers to alter their product mix. Shortages of materials caused immense problems as Detroit resumed production, but wood was not one of them. By the end of 1946, the Big Three offered wood-bodied wagons, sedans and convertibles - in far greater numbers that had been seen before the war.Servicemen returned home, married, and started families. War shortages eased, the United States economy grew, and suburban real estate development swelled. The American baby boom had begun. The wood bodied station wagon was the perfect vehicle for young families - or was it?Sadly, the wagon's most prominent feature was it's greatest drawback. Wood bodies required maintenance - not a problem for the wealthy with household staff. But as a 'do-it-yourself' chore, it was frequently neglected. Manufacturers responded by using less wood and more steel. In the early fifties, woodie resale values plummeted and new wagons of steel merely looked wooden. Referenced from: oldwoodies.com here is your chance to own one of henry ford's rarest woody wagons. what we have is an all original woodie and to the best of my knowledge has only been repainted once, this 1942 war wagon is a super deluxe flat head v8 three speed - three row seats as well all vinyl in immaculate condition. This woodie is a super survivor that turns heads everywhere it goes!! if you want a solid car in very good condition that runs and draws attention from everyone in sight - then let the bidding begin! I recently replaced, re-built or repaired the following: original shocks (rebuilt), new coker wide white tires, hub caps, trim rings, the bumpers are new, new water fall grille , the engine has been gone through, new water pumps, rebuilt radiator, new old stock gauges, 6 volt battery, brakes, wheel bearings, gas tank removed relined, replaced sending unit. new brake lines, New Vinyl top (Black) master cylinder , hoses , belts, voltage regulator, generator, new custom dual exhaust with smitty mufflers - sounds great! I sand-blasted orig floor boards and coated with epoxy. there are some small areas that have been metal patched, but the floor boards are original. i have replaced the passenger side running board with aftermarket and have a new one for the driver side that will go with the car. floor mats, new plug wires, distributor cap, rebuilt distributor and had it stroboscoped. I have added speed equipment(engine parts) from that era which includes pair of rebuilt stromberg 97's , aluminum intake, finned aluminum heads, with chrome acorn bolt covers , reds headers. The engine looks like new, compare it to all the others that are listed - runs great as well! I have all the original stuff for the purest. the car runs and drives straight and cruses 60 miles per hour no problem. the wood is all original with only three small spots that could be replaced - see photos for details. This car has had no body work done to it!! i have owned the car 4 years and my friend that i bought it from owned it for 18 years. everything works on the car except the radio which is a won-derbar and the clock. The clock is a waltham. I have replaced all the felt i can find on the windows and they all work and are not cracked, the seats are in Immaculate condition w/ labarron bonnie vinyl seat covers. The interior wood is all there and in good shape, the dash could be re-grain painted. the steering wheel is in nice shape and the horn ring works as well. you can see in the photos some of the stainless trim is bad. I could not find it or would have replaced it. all the doors open and close solid including the rear tailgate and window.
