1987 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo Diesel No Reserve!
Here is one you don't see every day. It is in respectable condition for a car of this age but will surely need some TLC if you plan on driving it for a while. This car would make a good candidate for a WVO conversion. The previous owner had already done the conversion and then took out the equipment before he traded it to us for a newer VW diesel, so the car has some existing wiring and plumbing that can be reused.
Let me be very clear upfront. This car is an old car and it has some issues. We are selling it as-is where-is. We are also selling it no reserve which means that the high bidder at the end of the auction will be the next owner of this car. There are no other fees or taxes, what you bid is what you will pay. Don't wait till the last minute and be outbid.
I will describe the bad and then the good.
The Bad
This car's odometer has not worked since 2005, hence the odometer discrepancy on Autocheck. I don't know exactly how many miles the car actually has on it but it surely exceeds 200,000. The previous owner thinks that it might be closer to 250,000 by now. Also the instrument panel doesn't light up at night.
The Anti-Lock brake system has a fault that turns the light on at about 10mph. The brakes work fine but there must be a bad wheel speed sensor or something.
This car has some rust starting to show a few places on the body. It is not yet severe but it will deteriorate soon if someone doesn't take care of it. See the pictures for more details. The amazing thing is that the underside of the car is fairly rust free. Of course that might have something to do with the fine coating of oil that is the result of the oil leaks/seeps that exist on this car. But what old MB diesel doesn't leak at least a little oil?
This car does have some leaks. It is hard to tell where they all come from because it has been like this for some time. It leaks a little oil but not enough to cause a big puddle or anything. It also leaks some small amount of coolant out of the coolant heater device. Also the windshield washer resevoir has a crack or hole somewhere in the bottom and all the washer fluid leaks out.
The AC compressor runs, but only if you bypass the climate control switch and wire it directly to a toggle switch on the dash. Talking about wires, there is a mess of wires under the hood, some of which belonged to the before mentioned WVO conversion.
The paint is starting to crack especially on the top surfaces. It does clean up nice but is starting to show its age.
The Good
This car is actually pretty clean especially the interior.
The car has 4 nearly new tires, new brakes, newer hoses, new serpentine belt, and new belt tensioner damper.
The car actually just passed the Virginia State Inspection which doesn't mean that it will pass every state's inspection but it does mean that all the lights work, the horn works, the wipers work, the tires, brakes, and steering are good, and the glass isn't cracked.
This car starts up and runs well even on cold mornings without being plugged in. it has plenty of power and the turbo spools up nicely. The oil pressure is very good and there are no check engine lights. There is no excessive smoking except right after a cold start.
This car comes with a whole box full of spare parts and related stuff (see picture). I have no idea what some of it is, but I am sure it will be helpful to the next owner. I do know that there are filters, fuses, tool kit, brake pads, O-rings etc in the box.
The power options work well including the mirrors, windows, sunroof and power seats.
Again, this car is being sold As-Is. I can make no promises about this car except that it is an old car with lots of miles. I do know that the previous owner drove it about 500 miles to bring it to trade it in at my dealership. I don't know if you can drive it home without trouble or not. I have driven it about 30 miles around town and it seems to do fine.
