Vehicle Detail

Gorgeous. Very unique and rare body style. All records on hand. These cars were low level Mercedes and most were not babied or taken care of like higher, more expensive models. Consequently, there are very few around in real cruising condition. This one was a sunday car from the beginning for an older couple in Minnesota. My uncle bought it from them and it sat in his garage for years. I have had it for twenty years now. Every professional who's worked on the car agrees the mileage is actual- it's also never been in the hands of someone who would have benefitted from tampering with the mileage. I've had many things done to the car over the years, and because of it's lower value I did, years ago, take the liberty of having some work done that makes the car not "original." The paint was originally white and I had it professionally painted the beautiful, classic British Racing Green you see. Chuck Smith Auto Body in Iowa City did the work- they are thought of as the best in the area. I also had the seats re-uphostered in a very classy/classic looking and feeling black, faux leather/velvet combo. Someone not familiar with old Mercedes would never know either of these alterations to be untrue to the original design- they look and function beautifully with the genre/style of the car. The car also has new Goodyear high performance tires that are a PERFECT size for this car. Something about the width and depth of the tire really compliment the body and add a great deal to it's appearance as well as its driving pleasure. Here is a partial list of more preservationist/purist restorations: -In '08 it had a 3,100 dollar "tune up" including cleaned and rebuilt carbs. The original four cylinder engine has two carburetors. It has new plug wires, a new distributor, fuel pump, new gaskets, many new hoses...I'm sure I'm forgetting things. The car simple could not run better. It runs and drives like a dream. -The brakes are also brand new, front and back. -The rear bumper was re-chromed in 08 by pro's. The bill was 700 dollars. -I had new shocks put in 2009. -Last summer I ordered a vintage/appropriate radio which is installed now and working beautifully. For 60 bucks you can order a wire from the same distributor in Germany that will allow you to connect an iPod to it at the back. I'm not kidding. The car has many very unique features: the very small fins on the back earned this model the nickname "Finny" and that alone has made it an increasingly popular collector's car. The vertical speedometer is mechanical, working, and beautiful- it operates on a cylinder. The auto transmission has a very cool, elegant floor shifter with chrome gear markings in German. As with any car of this age, part of the fun of owning it is not just driving it, but keeping it up. The only things left on my list for this car are 1) To get new door, trunk and window seals. I never drive it in weather but it does allow small amounts of water in at some points while being washed, which is a sign that it's time to get them done before it becomes an issue. I've had quotes from a couple hundred bucks to have this done. 2) There are some minor paint chips and scratches that have shown up in the past twenty years. Most are in the photos. There is some subtle bubbling in a couple places and an un-noticeable, small dent in the top of the right front quarter panel which will be a breeze for a pro to pop out- I've had it looked at. All in all, this car is a massive head turner. None of these things are noticeable at a casual glance or drive by. People that don't know anything about this model assume this car is worth a great deal of money- everything about its design and condition give that impression. Its an absolute dream to drive around town and on small, paved highways as well as the interstate. I'm sad to see it go, but I actually live in Los Angeles and only drive it when I'm back in Iowa City for extended stays every year, and I feel it's time to pass her off to a new, loving owner. I have no place to store it in Hollywood and have no plans to move soon. Shipping from Iowa City to either coast is 600 bucks. Please write with any questions. Thanks for your interest.
