CONVERSION CONVERTIBLE - RUST FREE SURVIVOR RARE AMERICAN CUSTOM COACHWORKS 1979 FORD THUNDERBIRD CONVERTIBLE ONE OF THE NICEST IN THE US !!! 33,000 original miles This fabulous car is one of the very limited 1978 & 1979 Thunderbird conversion convertibles produced by American Custom Coachworks LTD of Beverly Hills, California for a whopping $21,000 in 1979...Here is information I found thru Google on these cars: In the absence of Convertibles being manufactured by any of the Big Three after 1976, several private conversion companies jumped into the act of providing open air alternative conversions. In 1978 and 1979 the American Custom Coachworks LTD of Beverly Hills, CA provided a convertible conversion on the Thunderbird before the factory T-Roof Convertible option was available. At the time American Custom Coachworks was converting convertibles from Ford and Lincoln hardtops and a few General Motors models as well. For at least the early 1978 Thunderbird version, the rear seat was covered when the top was down making it a pseudo roadster. While the top was down it covered most of the rear seat. A boot or tuneau was then included to cover the top and covered entire area to the back of the front seat. An update on the 1979 versions top (and possibly late 78 versions), allowed the top to go into a well behind the rear seat. This allowed the rear seat to be used when the top was down. This was a great improvement over the 78 design! To purchase one of these exclusive conversions was not for the budget minded! While most of these cars were loaded with options, one had to be prepared to shell out a cool $21,000.00 for one of these Thunderbird Sport drop-tops to have the open air feel. There are no production figures available for either the 1978 or 1979 conversion run at this time. The June 1979 issue of Motor Trend did mention the Thunderbirds converted by American Custom Coachworks in their MEGABUCK $ Motoring article (pg 104) but there was no photo of the Thunderbird attached! This car was recently acquired and just finished a complete refresh. Loaded with options as the article said, this car is also equipped with a 351 Cobrajet engine !!! I think the 77-79 Thunderbirds are some of the best value collector cars. Great driving luxury cars at a reasonable costs. Recently purchased from a collector that owned the car since 2001, this car has traveled only 33,000 miles since new. It is ready for its next owner to enjoy. This great low mile car has had one repaint in it's original Dark Jade Poly metallic and is complemented by it's original Jade cloth interior and white convertible top. This lovely car has traveled just 33,000 miles since new, well cared for by its prior owners. Now it will look great in your garage. The car is equipped with a 351 cubic inch Cobrajet, 4BBL carb and automatic transmission. Cold factory air conditioning Body has no accident damage or rust ... the underside is as nice as the top !!!
