Vehicle Detail
1991 Bentley : Turbo R Rolls-Royce made it to the headlines when in September 1986 they sent a Bentley Turbo R to the high speed track that is a major feature of the Millbrock proving ground where company test driver D. Rowland achieved , along with 15 other new marks, a new national one-hour record of 140.96mph (225.46 km/h). The Bentley Turbo R 4-Door Saloon thus had beaten the previous record set by a Lamborghini Countach, i.e. by a 2-Door Fixed Head Coupé. It was no miracle that towards the end of the 80ies Bentley sales counted for approximately 50 % of all cars sold by Rolls-Royce. In 1990 from the overall figure of 3,333 Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars having been delivered (as per company’s press release from Sept. 1991) indeed no less than 1,070 had been Bentley Turbo R. This was remarkable because immediately after introduction of the turbo-charged version - in 1982 in the form of the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo – there had been some critic that the car’s suspension and drive-train didn’t harmonize perfectly well, and any attempt to employ the car in a true sports mode was hindered. There had been the question, too, whether or not turbo-charging of such a big engine would limit reliability and longevity? The manufacturer’s reaction had been to launch the Bentley Turbo R in 1985 and the ‘R’ stood for ‘Roadholding’ (the Mulsanne Turbo was phased out during that year). Most important from a magnitude of modifications were stiffer anti-roll bars front and rear (100 % stiffer front, 60 % stiffer rear), re-set location of rear suspension subframe and torsions bar in the rack-and-pinion steering stiffened by 50 %. This almost eliminated the previously criticized heavy roll on quick changes of direction. In combination with lowered weight of ‘unsprung masses’ thanks to new light alloy wheels this lead to the massive car being easy to handle under all conditions, especially at high speeds. Over the years detail specifications changed persistently and included the remarkable feature of electronically controlled adaptive damping being adopted for the 1990 model year. Thus it was guaranteed that within fractions of a second the dampers were automatically set according to driving attitude and road conditions. Hence it is only fair to say that a Bentley Turbo R from 1991 like the one shown here can be considered as but a very fine choice. Although over the following years further development resulted in one or the other improvement, this car even under present traffic conditions does offer impressive power in combination with the level of comfort that is the hallmark of a true ‘Upper Crust Motor Car’. – Present an absolutely stunning and exceptional example of this gorgeous original southern Florida 1991 Bentley Turbo R with only 75K original miles and in the stunning color combination of 'Acrylic White' factory color paint and Black Connolly hides with the rare and highly desirable factory option of a leather headliner, 17" factory 'Bentley wheels' and sheepskin floor rugs ! Purchased and always primarily serviced by original Canadian owner . This pristine example has it's original dealer maintenance booklet, owners manuals and complete tool kit included. The car has a beautiful and highly desirable color combination of original factory 'Acrylic White' exterior paint with original factory painted dark brown pin stripes, rare and highly striking chrome Bentley 17" wheels and with gorgeous 'Tan' Connolly leather hides, tan leather headliner and carpeting which is in virtually flawless condition throughout. The original paint is in beautiful condition with only very minor imperfections noticeable upon very close inspection. All the chrome work including the front grille and bumpers is absolutely outstanding. The leather seats, dashboard and leather headliner show virtually no signs of any wear whatsoever. The car drives exactly like a well maintained and serviced Bentley Turbo R should and must be driven to be fully appreciated and seen to be believed! The engine is extremely strong with no oil leaks, the transmission is very smooth with Rolls Royce/Bentley's legendary almost imperceptible shift and the engine temperature always remains cool. Turn-key ready, this particular model drives exactly as it must have when it left the showroom floor almost twenty years ago, you could not possible tell the difference! All the options are working as they should including the ice-cold A/C which was recently serviced at . Bentley's history is associated with luxury and grace but another attribute is of course high performance. Until 1982, the company, along with Rolls Royce, had been more concerned with building the best car money could buy .... and then it turbo-charged the Mulsanne. The car was a phenomenal performer for such a heavyweight and the Turbo R continued that tradition with a completely reworked chassis with upgraded steering and brakes and was aimed at the owner who preferred to drive themselves rather then be driven! To make such a large luxurious and heavy car go so fast (Bentley and Rolls Royce traditionally never published official figures but the output was conservatively estimated at 0-60 in 6.7 seconds with a top speed in excess of 170 mph) a V8 with a single in block cam and two overhead valves per cylinder displacing close to 427ci (7 liters) and breathed by a Garret turbo gave the Turbo R the pace of a low-slung supercar! This gave the car dramatic acceleration and earned it a following amongst enthusiastic and obviously well-heeled (original cost of this car was over $145K) driver's! Unrestricted versions, with low profile tires have been tested at speeds in excess of 170 mph proving the turbo-charger turned the already potent engine into a powerhouse! Stiff suspension, front and rear anti-roll bars and electronically (computer) controlled variable rate self-leveling shocks for any driving condition kept the ride smooth despite the beefed up suspension and the road handling was absolutely world class exceptional too! Big 18" rims went against tradition but run on 265/45 ZR tires in the turbo R's sporting theme. Technical Data: All alloy V8, conventional configuration.
