Vehicle Detail
I was actually the first owner of this VW Passat. I am selling it for a life long friend who is the second and only other owner of the car. It is a 2005 4-Motion Passat GLS with manual five-speed transmission. Officially, VW did not produce this model in 2005 but somewhere between VW marketing, management and the factory, there was a breakdown in communications and a very few were produced early in the production cycle before a halt was ordered. Please note the early vin number (6917th VW produced in the 2005 model year). I purchased the car off the show room floor of Danbury VW in late October of 2004. It was the only 4-motion--manual transmission car they had (and it turned out to be the only one they ever saw). By their estimate, there were something between three and five total in the USA as this setup was not intended to be built at all. I have never seen another one. Even when creating this ad, Ebay noted (on the pre-filled form) that this was a special car calling it a special production model. I founded a car show in Newport Rhode Island which kicked off in 2006 after about a year of planning. This car was primarily used for trips between Hartford, CT and Newport Rhode Island for the first 2+ years of ownership. I averaged 27 miles per gallon on the car during the four years I drove it. The bulk of my driving was highway miles. I had the oil changed at my local dealership at 5K mile intervals with an occasional change at my shop where I serviced some classic cars. What neither I nor my local dealership knew is that VW calls for synthetic motor oil only on the car. Both the VW dealership AND my repair shop incorrectly used standard motor oil instead of synthetic oil (Mobile 1, etc) for all of the oil changes. As a result, the engine developed problems at 64K miles. The dealer (after substantial haggling) agreed to replace the motor under warrentee (which VW of North America extended as a courtesy because of the unusual nature of the problem). In December of 2007, the engine was replaced at a cost of almost $9,000 with a brand new factory motor. The turbo charger was also replaced as were virtually all of the under hood wear items. All of the receipts from this work are with the car. Since then, the oil has been changed with ONLY Mobile 1 synthetic at increments ranging from 3 to 5,000 miles. I sold the car to a dear friend in September, 2008 when I took delivery of my new diesel Jetta. Since then, the car has been used primarily for his business traveling from Western Connecticut to Massachusetts and upstate, NY. The car currently has 133,000 miles on the odometer and under 70K miles on the engine. Options include 4-motion (all wheel drive), manual transmission, factory upgraded VW monsoon sound system, sunroof, power windows, power locks, heated seats, and full trip computer. The overall condition of the car is excellent. There are several very small stone chips in the original paint at the top-front of the hood. There is also a very small scuff in the drivers side rear bumper. One small piece of trim has a dent in it (I will post pics of all and can email at high resolution if asked). Everything works correctly as it did from the factory. The car has no needs whatsoever and has never been stored outdoors. It has always been garaged. The is no rust or other issues anywhere on the car. Please note that I ran out of space for pictures so I only show two wheels. The tires are excellent with plenty of tread left. The one scuffed wheel is shown in the photos. The other three wheels are perfect condition. If you are looking for a great commuter car, ideal car for the kids or something to take on long haul drives, this is a great candidate. I would argue that it is probably one of the nicest 2005's around and runs as well as a car with 50K miles on the clock. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions either by calling me at 860-883-3998 or by clicking on the contact seller link. My feedback is excellent and I have sold several cars on Ebay. Thanks and good luck. John
