Vehicle Detail

1965 Jaguar 3.8 S (the original S-Type) Car can be inspected and driven at the Cincinnati Jaguar Club Concours d’Elegance on Saturday, June 28 in West Chester Ohio. (See this link for details: http://www.jcna.com/calendar/flyer/nc59-278558812.pdf) If you want to view the car, please phone 513-383-5384 to verify. - 4 speed o/d, rebuilt engine, great driver, independent rear suspension - Beautiful straight body, seats need to be redone - Featured on 1994 Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance poster - Owned 21 years, no longer have storage space - 1st Place in JCNA National Rally: 1995, 1999, 2000 - Includes restoration photos, receipts, catalog, poster and more - 1965 RHD parts car with good wood available.... cheap! Perfect for restoration, daily driving or maybe even a hot rod! After 21 years in the family, this Jag is ready to fly the coop. Purchased in 1989 for restoration as a daily driver. Paint was stripped to bare metal by plastic media blasting, rusted panels were replaced with authentic Martin Robey parts from England. Finished with black urethane enamel and wet sanded to smooth patina. Original XK engine rebuilt, original automatic transmission replaced with Jaguar 4-speed manual w/overdrive unit removed from another S-Type. (The donor car is still available with interior wood in good condition.) Wool carpet and headliner replaced with Bartlett products. Virtually all mechanicals have been replaced or rebuilt. Electric sunroof made by Sky-Top is sluggish, but operational, and have parts breakdown and other info. Worn leather seats were replaced with vinyl, but with proper stitching pattern. This car has performed admirably over the years and finished first in the JCNA (Jaguar Clubs of North America) National Rally Championship in 1995, 1999 and 2000. (FYI, these are dignified time-speed-distance events that test reliability and navigational skills and should not be confused with the flat-out high-speed rallying like Targa Newfoundland that you might see on television.) This S-Type has been shown in the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance and was featured as the background for the Concours poster. One of the posters will be included with the sale of the car. Now... fast forwarding to 2010, here’s the status of the car today. Although it is 45 years old, because of the older restoration, it’s in the condition of a well-used 20-year-old car. Some rust has formed in the wheel arches, lower rear valance, around the edge of the sunroof and in some small areas of the floor. The tires are old and the wire wheels no longer sparkle. The seat foam and some of the seams have deteriorated. The vinyl on the door panels has loosened and the veneer has taken a turn for the worse. Nevertheless, the body is straight and smooth. The compound curves are distinctive and unlike any modern car. There were only 15,000 of this model produced from 1964 to 1968 and it’s a real head-turner wherever it goes. Its stylish design prevails and from about 12 feet away, the flaws seem to disappear. (Think of Raquel Welch) On the Fourth of July in 2008, debris from a fireworks display at a city park found it way to the Jaguar and caused some burns to the paint on the horizontal surfaces. (Could this have been the renewal of a British-American grudge from Revolutionary War days?) The burn marks can be seen in one of the photos. I’m not sure if the spots can be buffed out, so any buyer should be aware of this defect. (Just imagine how Raquel’s wrinkles seem to disappear from a distance.) Most of these photos were taken several years ago. I will be posting additional photos of the interior before Saturday. Auction is scheduled to end on Sunday, August 29 at about 6:00 pm Eastern time. Seller reserves the right to end sale early. Call 513-383-5384 with any questions. On Aug-27-10 at 22:09:51 PDT, seller added the following information: ___________________________________________________________________ Friday night revision: ADDITIONAL INFO BELOW PLUS 16 MORE PHOTOS IMPORTANT ADDITION: All of the wood trim taken from my parts car will be available FREE to the winning bidder on the car. I just retrieved the pieces from storage and realize that they are very solid and the veneer is not cracking like on the car. But they do need to be cleaned and clear coated. I think all are there, except that some of the dash face pieces are not applicable because the parts car is right hand drive and some of the console bits are in poor shape. (NOTE: parts car will be listed soon, so check my other listings for "Jaguar 3.8S") Note in the photos that the flaps for the door map pockets and the passenger center armrest are not installed. These pieces are included in a bin that has all sorts of upholstery remnants. You can expect a car in this price category to have some deficiencies… otherwise it would be worth additional tens of thousands of dollars. For the better part of this year, the car has been started but not driven except for moving it around the storage warehouse. When I took it out on the road today, I noticed or remembered the following: the right turn signal does not work, the car pulls some to the right when braking, the handbrake is stuck in the off position and probably needs a good lube, the speedometer stopped working last fall – probably the cable, the tach is electric and has always been erratic, the radio is from a newer Jaguar and is not hooked up, the right front vent window has a cracked hinge and I have a replacement one from the parts car, and the sunroof needs a new gasket. On the positive side, I find myself staring at the graceful curves of the car’s exterior and admiring the quality of the panel work done by the restoration shop. When I posted this listing, the car was not nearby and I mistakenly guessed there were about 80,000 miles on the odometer. The corrected mileage reading is 96,924. If any of the bidders have an issue with this, please contact me. Thank you for your interest in my car.
