Vehicle Detail
Up for auction here is a 1985 Nighthawk 700SC that is super clean and has ridiculously low mileage for being 25 years old. This motorcycle has been in no accidents, hasn't ever been dropped or tipped over, and the stated 9970 miles is correct. Please note that the mileage might increase a little if anyone were to test ride it. Other than regular maintenance items being replaced, the motorcycle is 100% stock. This motorcycle has been meticulously maintained. Relatively recent (within the last 1000 miles) maintenance performed includes: new Metzeler tires front and back, synthetic oil change with filter, new spark plugs, new air filter, and the driveshaft fluid was replaced. This motorcycle gets compliments nearly every time I ride it- from car and motorcycle enthusiasts alike. Truly telling how clean it is- whenever I have gone to any motorcycle shop to get tune up parts, buy a helmet, or for any other reason, any sales or service person who sees it gives it a huge thumbs up and will stop me to talk about it. People who know that this bike is 25 years old are amazed how clean it is. This bike mechanically is in excellent condition. I ride this bike 70 miles round trip when I take it to work and have put about 2000 miles on it within the past few months. I would ride this bike anywhere, any distance. The engine is strong- no rattles, smoke, hiccups, or any other issues. The engine is exceptionally clean. The transmission and clutch all work 100% as they should- no rattles, clunks, squeals, slips, or any other issues with them. The brakes all work 100% as they should. The brake fluid is clean. The headlights, turn signals, dash lights, and horn all work. There is no sludge anywhere on the bike, and there are no fluid leaks anywhere. The bike is started with electronic ignition and starts every time with the first press of the starter button. This bike will pass any state safety inspection without any issue. The paint is 100% shiny and all the decals and manufacturer safety labels are in perfect condition and in place. All the chrome and aluminum covers are shiny and in excellent condition. The aluminum lips on the wheels are also shiny and in excellent condition. The seat is in excellent condition. With all the above said, the bike is in better than excellent condition, but not 100% perfect. 4 areas that need improvement if anyone wanted to nitpick are as follows: 1) there is a small 1/4" scuff on the very front of the front fender that has been touched up but can be seen if kneeling down 1ft. away looking right at it, and 2) there are 3 hairline scratches (about 1/2") on one of the exhaust pipes which might be able to be buffed out or touched up, and 3) the plastic support braces for the turn signals have hairline cracks (all 4 can be replaced with new ones for $20), and finally, 4) the fuel gauge needle drops to empty when there is less than 3/4 tank of fuel. The issue with the fuel gauge is a common problem on these motorcycles and I have read that it is due to the high sulfur fuel up until the late 90's which affected the fuel level sensor in the tank. I guess it could be replaced, but the odometer and trip odometer work and I refuel every 130ish miles before needing to even switch over to the reserve tank. These 4 issues are minor. I am 42 years old, am a motorcycle and car enthusiast and have bought many cars and bikes over the years. I have found that very few sellers would mention even 1 of the 4 minor issues listed above. I have tried to take photos of the scuffed area on the front fender and of the scratches on the exhaust pipe and am including them in the listing photos. I can confidently say there are tons of motorcycles out there that are less than 5 years old with less than 2500 miles on them that aren't as clean as this motorcycle. But at the same time, I know it is right to share even minor issues if I know of them so there are no surprises for the winning bidder. The fine print.... 1) I live in Glen Burnie, Maryland (zipcode 21060 just south of Baltimore) and work in Upper Marlboro, Maryland (zipcode 20772 a little north of Washington D.C.) and am willing to ride the bike within 10 miles of either zipcode or anywhere in between to assist in any inspection or the final sale of the bike. 2) I will ship the bike- at your expense, and you have to make all arrangements with whichever transport company you choose. Payment for the bike must be 100% clear before the bike is picked up. 3) If you want to test drive the bike, you will need to show me cash in hand prior to riding it. You must also show me a valid class M motorcycle license. 4) I accept green cash and/or Paypal for payment and don't charge any fee for you using Paypal to complete the transaction. A $300 non-refundable deposit by Paypal is due immediately after the auction ends if the bike is won through bidding. The balance of the winning bid is due within 7 days of winning the motorcycle. However, if you purchase the bike through using the "Buy it Now" option, full payment through Paypal is immediately due. If you want to come check out the bike first prior to bidding, please do so. 5) The bike will also be offered for sale outside this auction. If my reserve price has been met in this auction, the bike won't be sold outside the auction. But until the reserve has been met, the bike may be sold outside the auction. Please don't ask what my reserve price is- it is reasonable. The reserve price is only a few hundred dollars more than what I am seeing other beat up, high mileage 700 Nighthawks or even standard 650 Nighthawks, being purchased for here on Ebay. This is an awesome motorcycle. In the mid 80's this was considered a superbike. And even this day the looks of it aren't dated and it holds it's own against any of the 600 sized bikes being made these days. Most 600's will run a 1/4 mile in 11.90 and the cycle magazines tested this bike as fast as 12.04 in the 1/4. But it is worth noting that I haven't abused this bike- have only ridden 75 mph tops and haven't shifted past 8k rpms which is nowhere near the redline. The previous owner is a lifelong police officer who had the motorcycle almost it's entire life, cared well for it, but rarely rode it because it was 1 of several "toys" he owned. There are advantages about this bike worth noting. For starters, this bike is very comfortable to ride- you sit fairly upright unlike most sportbikes or even most sport touring bikes- so there is no strain on your back, wrists, or elbows. Next, insurance is inexpensive because of it's age and the fact that it isn't considered a rocket bike by insurance companies. And one last one that I will offer is this-- this bike is fairly unique. This ride stands out in a crowd because not everyone has one. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw anyone else riding one. It is also unique in that the engine is exposed and is really sharp looking. If you have any other questions- please contact me through Ebay's "contact seller" link, or email me directly at harryhrowe@aol.com, or you can call my cell at 443-458-2493 anytime between 10am and 6pm. Please bid with confidence. I value the ability to trade here on Ebay and so deal honestly so I maintain a good reputation. I have sold cars and motorcycles here on Ebay all with positive feedback. I deal with others as I would like to be treated myself. Also, for references, I have sold a number of cars on car enthusiast websites such as bimmerforums.com, svtperformance.com, vwvortex.com, and corral.net all under the username FHATTCATT where you could search forum threads for what I have sold. Also, I can email email the photos in the listing bigger and in better detail if you would like - to show how clean this motorcycle really is. And I would be happy to take any additional photos you might want. Just let me know- Good luck bidding! On Aug-07-10 at 20:05:11 PDT, seller added the following information: Edit: I will add that I am able to pickup anyone who might want to fly into the BWI airport and then ride the bike home. I have sold a number of cars and another motorcycle to people in the past with them flying in. I myself have flown out of state a handful of times to purchase cars and ride them back home. On Aug-08-10 at 09:34:32 PDT, seller added the following information: Edit #2: I added 14 more photos to the listing. If you want any/all of the 24 photos I have of the bike in bigger pics with better detail (Ebay only lets you upload pics but so big...) just let me know and I can email them to you. Also, today I polished the scratched exhaust pipe with Scratch Doctor and the scratches are barely noticeable. And when viewing any of the photos, there may appear to be nicks or chips in the tank or tail section paint- there aren't any nicks or chips anywhere. Those areas are either a reflection or some kind of blurb on the photo. The paint on this bike is nearly flawless.
