Vehicle Detail
1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible Engine: 170 cu. in. inline 6 cyl Trans: 3-speed on the floor Mileage: 73,800 unconfirmed VIN: 5F08U125432 Exterior Color: Rangoon Red Interior Color: Red Up for auction is this sweet 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible. The door data tag decodes as: BODY: 76A = 2 door convertible COLOR: J = Rangoon Red TRIM: 85 = Red Vinyl with Red Trim DATE: 02E = May 2nd, 1964 DSO: 71 = Los Angeles, CA AXLE: 5 = 3.50 TRANS: 1 = 3-speed manual Let's start with the data tag info. This Mustang is the original color of Rangoon Red. A '64 1/2 Mustang convertible has long been one of the most recognizable and desirable cars ever built, and here is one in the most desirable color combination of Rangoon Red with a white top and red interior! A great date in history is April 17th, 1964. This is the day that the lengendary Mustang was introduced to the public. Ford hoped for total sales of about 100,000 Mustangs in 1964, that number was blown away completely (417,000 in the first year) including 22,000 Mustangs ordered the first day! If one looks at the date this Mustang was made, May 2nd of 1964, you can see that it is only 2 weeks and 1 day after the Mustang came into existence! Doing some quick math, 417000 Mustangs divided by 52 weeks = just over 8000 cars per week...one could easily think that this very Mustang may have been ordered that first day! In any case, this is one of the earliest Mustangs you will ever see. The DSO on the door data tag stands for Domestic Special Order. This is the information regarding which sales district ordered the car. From this, we can tell that this is an original *CALIFORNIA* car as it was ordered for Los Angeles, CA. From the previous owner we know this to be a 4 owner CA and GA car, a southern car it's entire life. This explains the exceptionally clean, rust-free and solid underside and only a couple of very mild bubbles in the paint on this Mustang. The paint is not perfect and there are a couple of touch-up spots, there is also a noticeable scrape on the driver's side fender. I've documented these "imperfect" spots in the last few pictures. This car is in otherwise VERY good shape. Finally, the last 2 bits of info on the door tag relates that this Mustang has a 3.50:1 rear axle ratio and a 3-speed manual transmission. Speaking from personal experience, there is no feeling on this world quite like driving your own Mustang and shifting your own gears with the top down. This Mustang is in perfect mechanical shape. The engine has been rebuilt and the trans shifts smoothly. It starts easily and runs great, see the video. It has aftermarket oil pressure, voltage and water temperature gauges added just for piece of mind and mounted nicely out of the way in the engine compartment. Given the pristine condition of the underside, I would believe that this car only has 73,800 miles on it. However, it is not know if that is actual miles or not. It has new tires, new upper and lower radiator hoses, a new heater hose (included, not installed), new vacuum advance line and new fuel line. Underneath, it has new KYB shocks, new front stabilizer bar links and bushings as well as new strut bar bushings. Appearance-wise, the manual white convertible top is in excellent shape with no rips or tears. It can be moved smoothly up or down. It's also got new fender emblems, taillight lenses and bezels, new front and rear valance panels with the rest of the body panels thought to be all original, and a new front bumper and bumper guards. In the interior, a new shifter knob, dash bezel and lens as well as a brand new carpet and seat belts to complete the list. A 1964 Mustang Shop Manual Supplement go with the car as well as a 1964-65 Mustang Wiring Diagram Manual. These are both vintage manuals and very cool! So what do we have here? We have a *very* nice driver quality '64 1/2 Mustang convertible 3-speed, California car, Rangoon Red with a white top, that you can use, drive and enjoy immediately without worry that is such an early Mustang that it may actually have been ordered the first day Mustangs existed!
