Steve Saleen transformed the 1996 Mustang GT’s already attractive body into a ravishing head-turner he calls the Saleen S281 The S281 name comes from the SOHC modular V-8’s 280.3-cubic-inch displacement. The S281 gets a 7 HP boost from a new Saleen-branded air cleaner and a Borla exhaust system. The shift linkage boasts a 30-percent-shorter throw than the stock GT. Brake hardware upgrades to the front axle are Saleen/Alcon brake calipers with 13-inch rotors. Suspension changes include shorter, stiffer springs that drop ride height 1.25 inches to lower the center of gravity and enhance appearance. Also fitted are stiffer struts and shocks, urethane anti-roll bar bushings, and urethane upper strut mounts.
Externally, the S281 gets a unique front fascia, side skirts, and rear valance, all made of high-impact urethane; a composite rear wing; and 18x8.5-inch five-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels
Interior modifications are limited to the shift lever, Steve Saleen signature, and a set of white-face Saleen gauges, including a 150-mph speedometer.
Our red and black S281 convertible is a one owner California car with under 30,000 original miles on the odometer and a clean Carfax. The tires were recently replaced with less than 1,000 miles of use. This S281 is number 394 of 406 produced and signed by Steve Saleen on the dash and under the hood.
The paint shows signs of age and the paint on the front bumper, rear bumper and spoiler needs some care (see photos). There is a tear in the convertible top that could use repair. The top is watertight and if you are only going to be doing top down driving, leave it as is. Overall, this is a nice car that runs well. Get the reliability and power features of a Mustang GT wrapped in Saleen style and performance.
