Vehicle Detail
1963 Lyn Airvan - GMC PB2500 chassis - straight 6, 4 speed, manual steering, power brakes All-aluminum body built by Lyn Coach. Number 469 of the original run of approximately 600 built from 1963 to 1965. Only sold to emergency services, most were used up and scrapped. I know of one other in existence. You will not see another on the road (or for sale anytime soon). GMC PB 2500 chassis. The GMC chassis means it isn't difficult to find mechanical parts. Inline 6 into a 4-speed manual trans with a granny first. Dual rear wheels. Giant drum brakes. Manual steering with a huge wheel. Had the chassis and drivetrain gone through last fall, and with the exception noted below, it was given a clean bill of health. The clock shows 12,240 miles. As best I can tell, that's the original mileage, since the truck wasn't used very much by any of the prior owners, but I can't verify that for certain. No mileage is listed on the title. New tires (which aren't cheap, but which do last forever), rebuilt carb, re-cored radiator, new brake master cylinder. Brakes and cooling system flushed last fall. Ex-Wisconsin truck, so there is rust underneath. The pictures make it look worse than it looks in person. The body hasn't rusted, since it's aluminum. Federal Model 12 light bar and siren. Fully-functional, you just need a tone generator for the siren and to hook the whole thing up to a switch. It's big. The picture with the motorcycle should give some idea of scale. The cargo area is 5' 8" by 10' 4" from behind the front seat. The most I've ever carried was three complete motorcycles, a spare frame, two spare engines, a toolbox, and a few boxes of other parts. All in all, it was about 1500 lbs of stuff. The truck didn't notice. Still got 12 mpg, just like always. As above, you are not likely to find another one, on the road or off. It looks great and gets tons of attention. It needs: - Brakes. They function, but there's a leak somewhere in the lines, so they lose pressure over time. The master cylinder was the main culprit, but I replaced it and the problem persists. The hydrovac (remote booster) is now the prime suspect. Obviously I can't recommend that anyone drive the truck in this state, but it may have been driven from Richmond, VA to Knoxville, TN and around town for a few months and over 1000 miles without incident. - A muffler. The one on it is rusted through. It'll also need part of the pipe replaced. Not really a big deal, but I haven't gotten it to a muffler shop to take care of it. - Wiring. The basic functions work. Someone with a great fondness for crimp connectors attacked it at some point though. The rat's nest that person left has been removed, but some of the ancillary stuff like the light bar, spots, horn, etc., aren't hooked up. It could use a good going-through. I picked it up from the prior owner (a volunteer fire department) last summer, intending to convert it into a bike hauler and add bunks for a place to sleep on the road. For a variety of reasons, that didn't happen, so now I have to sell it. Prior to me, it was owned by the volunteer fire department, a police department, and a fire department, which bought it new. This is a reserve auction. I will not disclose the reserve, but the reserve is the absolute minimum I'm willing to accept for it. I do have it listed elsewhere. Until the reserve is met, I may sell it elsewhere, but after the reserve is met, I will let the auction run to completion and sell to the winner. If you're the sort who insists on not bidding, send me your best offer before reserve is met. Within 48 hours of auction close, a $500 deposit is due by Paypal. Within 7 days of auction close, the balance is due. I accept payment in cash or by bank wire transfer. The truck is being sold with a clean Tennessee title in my name. The truck is sold as-is and where-is with no additional warranties and must be removed by the end of June. The buyer is responsible for all arrangements and expenses related to that. The truck is available for inspection by appointment in Powell, TN, just north of Knoxville. Call me with questions at 804.980.0141 or email mbz230sl1965@gmail.com. You can also ask through ebay, but it will take me longer to answer. Thank you for looking. Good luck bidding. On Jun-01-10 at 12:48:27 PDT, seller added the following information: More answers to what seem to be common questions: It does have a heater / window defogger built into the dash ahead of the instrument panel. The heater works very well. The window defogger does a fine job, but does take a minute to clear that giant greenhouse. The headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and wipers all work. The only basic function that doesn't is the horn, because it was tied into the siren circuit, and the siren's tone generator was removed when the truck left the fire department. The fuel gauge occasionally reads off-the-scale full or empty, but usually goes back to regular operation shortly thereafter. I assume the wire to the sender is grounding on something and needs to be replaced. It'll do 70 mph reasonably comfortably for short periods of time, and it's happy doing 55 - 60 mph all day. It's 6'1" tall inside at the bottom of the ribs at the center of the truck. The actual roof is a little higher. Most people can stand inside without crouching. I cannot accept trades. I need the cash. The only trade I would be interested in would be the partial trade of an old (pre-1983), reasonably clean, not-lifted Toyota pickup. In the off-chance you have one, want to get rid of it, want this truck, and win the auction / make an offer I can't pass up before reserve is met, I'd be glad to work it out. Otherwise, I'll have to pass. Again, thank you for looking. On Jun-04-10 at 21:17:52 PDT, seller added the following information: ------------------------------------------------------------------ A few people have asked about getting the brakes fixed locally so that the truck can be (more safely) driven after pickup. I've been unable to find a shop that will give me an estimate on the brakes without seeing the truck (which I think is understandable), and I haven't had time to get the truck in anywhere, so I do not have a cost on that.Unfortunately, for the time being, I have to revert to the "as-is, where-is" pickup routine, and leave all responsibility for picking up the truck with the buyer, including making any arrangements for it to be delivered to a shop and repaired if that's what the buyer wants to do. I realize the inconvenience this poses for some buyers, but some of the requests were getting a little out of hand, and if I have to draw a line somewhere, that's the easiest and most fair place to draw the line. Finally, I appreciate all of the offers that have been made, and even for the many requests for the reserve price, but ask that anyone who makes an offer not be offended if I decline or do not get back to you. I'm looking for a quick sale, so my minimum is low, but this is a rare truck with a solid history in very good condition for its age, so it may not be quite as low as, say, a 20 year-old, run-of-the-mill, beat P30. I do not give out the reserve as a matter of principle. As always, thanks for looking, and good luck bidding.
