Vehicle Detail

Yes, you saw that correctly! This 40-year-old little car has 18,300 Actual Miles! It spent most of its life in desert-dry New Mexico, and the last couple of years here in almost-as-dry Lubbock, Texas. I originally bought the car to fully restore for the wife to have a "play car". Soooo, I had the mechanics of the car completely rebuilt (more on that below) and began the arduous task of teaching her to drive a standard transmission. Turns out, she hates standard transmissions in any shape or form and refuses to drive the car. My play car is a 560SL, so, the Roadster just sits in the garage. Enough background. Here's what you'll want to know about the car. This car is 100 percent rust free -- none anywhere, including the floor pans. Mechanically, this car is 100 percent rebuilt. No matter how few miles, forty year old rubber and cork is still shot, though, so I had the engine, carburetors, transmission, drive train, brakes, suspension -- all completely rebuilt. Even mechanical systems that were working have been rebuilt or replaced (alternator, fuel pump, radiator, starter, heater core, battery, for examples.) For reliability, I even had the distributor replaced with an electronic one. I did have all the smog junk removed and nice brass plugs installed. (Still have the smog junk, if purchaser wants it.) Rear end fluids and seals replaced. The exhaust has been replaced within the last few years and is in good condition. I also had the nortoriously-known-to-rust fuel tank replaced with a cosmetically-identical, non-rustable tank, filler tube and seal. Front disc brakes and a "high windshield" are desirable traits for this model of 1600. Four brand new radial tires and repainted wheels makes it tight, fast, and no rattles! (The original, never-been-on-the-ground bias ply tire is in the nice-shape, original mat and tire cover trunk. Wouldn't mount the spare, though!) I won't list everything that's been done to it mechanically, but I have all receipts for the work. And let's just say, mechanically, it runs like a bat outta hades. Now, none of this is to say the car is a $25K restoration. Quite the opposite. Mechanically, it's perfect, but because the cosmetics are mostly original or unrestored, it puts the car at a price point that just about anyone can afford. Usual paint chip here and there, but still very restorable to show quality, or respectable enough to drive as-is. Someone painted it in the distant past, nice job, no "waving", "orange peel" or runs in the body. The paint job was a pretty good one, too -- under the hood is painted to match, as are doorjambs, under trunk lid, etc. I couldn't bring myself to have the block painted that horrible Datsun blue of the time, so the block is red, with engine bay black (painted during the mechanical overhaul). There is a small dent in the front bumper, and exhaust has discolored the back bumper. Glass is all good shape with no cracks, but the driver's window is off-the-rails inside the door. All other cosmetics are working -- clock, radio, wipers, heater. The seat belts are generic, after market belts. I am advised that the original color was white, as the interior is tan. I am also advised that the doorskins and seats have been recovered somewhere in the distant past, but to an untrained eye, (mine) I thought they were original. Unless you're on a hard-core, purist mission to restore the car to show condition, I'd just drive it. The weather is warming up and Roadsters in this condition are getting hard to find. For the most part, they're either very expensive restorations, or rust buckets, or trashed out mods. This little car is none of those. I'll accept any form of payment. I'll hold the car, though, until a personal check clears my bank. It's for sale locally, also, and I reserve the right to remove the listing at any time. The car is for sale locally, so the auction may end at any time. If you live in a dry enough climate, you could fly to Lubbock and drive the little Fairlady home. It's that reliable!
