1958 Merceds-Benz 190SL Roadster W121 The Road & Track October 1955 Test Said "The outstanding achievement of the 190SL is without a doubt its quality in design and workmanship. But a close second is the general feeling of solidity which it immediately conveys..." Also known as "Baby Merc" or the “Little Brother” to the 300 SL, 190 SL’s make a great and fun collector automobile. These cars were guaranteed to sell to enthusiasts who couldn't stretch to a Gullwing and didn't need the electrifying performance of a Gullwing. Although the 190SL shared the same wheelbase as the 300SL, a number of it's major components came from the 180 Saloon. Several modifications were made between the unveiling of the prototype in New York at the New York Motor Show and the beginning of production in the Spring of 1955. The first uni-body Mercedes Benz used a steel chassis with aluminum hood, trunk lid, doors and dash. Up for auction is 1958 Mercedes Benz 190SL in need of completion of total restoration. In 1958 there were only 2,722 190SL’s built and this SL is one of them. This Mercedes is complete, and it makes a great candidate for a show quality restoration! Best thing is it is sold with NO RESERVE, so may the highest bidder win!!!!! Restoration was started few years ago, and first and hardest step which is body work is completed. Car has been professionally taken apart down to its bare chassis and all rust problems were taken care of using only original Mercedes-Benz sheet metal. All original welding dots along the front fenders are still present, showing originality of this car. Hood and chassis plate (Karosserie number) are both having a matching number ending in “401” (please see pictures in the album), which is another evidence of the originality of this Mercedes. It is now 100% RUST FREE and it looks factory new (please see pictures). Trunk, floor boards, body panels, wheel wells, rockers, everything is rock solid and rust free!! Car was painted in Metallic Electric Blue to make sure that all body work was done properly, and to spot any imperfections before final and show quality paint job is put on. In its current condition, paint has a very nice shine and luster and it looks very nice but its up to the new owner to decide if he wants to keep the current paint, or paint it back to its original DB 050 white (weiss) paint. Interior is red, so any color combination will make this car look stunning!! Like mentioned before car was completely disassembled and all original parts were neatly stored into boxes (chrome trim pieces, gauges, harnesses, nuts, bolts, door panels, rear view mirror, etc…) (please see pictures). Engine and transmission were put back into the car and now restoration needs to be completed. Interior is complete down to its Kienzle Clock and Becker Mexico Radio! Car comes with both tops – rare option hard top, and soft top whose frame is complete and operates with ease. All glass is in very nice condition, and windows roll down up and down without any problems. Engine is complete, but it has not been run since restoration was started few years ago and it comes with original Solex carburetors. Car now does roll and steer without any problems. This beautiful antique Mercedes will only continue to appreciate in its value, and with time, these cars are getting harder and harder to come by. These SL’s fully restored will easily go $65,000 +!!!! This car is great investment, which will only continue to appreciate in its value, definitively better than any stock at this time!!!!!
