Vehicle Detail
Here are the three most important things about this car. (1) The pricing. The Kelly Blue Book value is $1,457 for this car, with 260,000 miles, in fair condition. The range is $743 to $2,170. (2) It runs. Actually, I think it runs well, and most of the major repairs have been performed within the last several years. (3) It can be shipped anywhere. Montway Auto Transport is but one of many providers of this service. I purchased this car new (see photo of original sticker) in the fall of 2002, when I was living in California, and it has been my primary form of transportation ever since. Virtually all of these cars have an automatic transmission. This one has a five-speed, manual, transmission. It is the original one that came with the car, and while the shifting is a little looser than it once was, it still functions well. However, I would not recommend this as a car for learning how to use a manual transmission; I’m not certain the mechanism could take the stress inherent in the learning process. As the original sticker shows, the car came with the following options:(a) metallic paint;(b) X1 Premium;(c) X3 Weather;(d) Xenon headlamps; and(e) premium sound w/CD changer. There have been four major repairs. Service receipts are available for each. (1) Replacement of A/C compressor and related hoses. $2,184.92. April 2011. 202,319 miles. (2) Replacement of the ABS brake system. $4,514.36. November 2011. 209,865 miles. (3) Replacement of all brake pads and rotors. $1,656.95 cost. May 2012. 222,546 miles. (4) Replacement of all coils, spark plugs and intake gaskets. $1,906.06 cost. November 2017. 254,392 miles. The tires are Michelin Defenders, purchased from Discount Tire in November 2015 for $684.11 when the mileage was 242,892. They have been rotated regularly, and have a 90,000 mile warranty. (Receipt available.) The battery is new, replaced in May 2018. (Receipt available.) Bearing in mind that the price reflects the car’s age and condition, here is a list of all the things I am aware of that are problems I learned to live with. 1. There is a small oil leak near the oil pan. I never fixed it because it didn’t seem worth the $1,500 price tag when I was first told about it ten years ago. The result is slight oil stains on whatever is underneath the car. It has never been severe enough to cause me to add oil, but then I have generally changed the oil every six months, regardless of the mileage. 2. The left front headlight does not work in the normal position, but does work in the bright position. 3. The gas cap is released by a lever at the bottom of the driver-side door sill. However, this lever must be propped up (I use my glasses case) in order for the release to work. And even then, you must use your fingers to open the exterior gas lid. 4. The leather on the driver’s seat is split severely enough that I use a seat cover. There are some minor scratches in the leather on the passenger side seat, and a few on the back seat. The up and down function on the driver’s seat does not work, but the other power functions do work (back and forth for the seat, and tilt for the seat back). 5. Parts of the dashboard have swelled due to sun exposure. The car was housed in a garage most of its life, but has been parked outside for the past four and a half years I have been on Florida. 6. The clear coat has worn off much of the hood and part of the roof. 7. The small washers for the front headlights are missing. 8. The parking brake does not work, which means the car must be left in gear when parked, and cannot be parked on a steep incline, which is not a problem in Florida, the flattest state in the nation. 9. One time I waited too long to replace the windshield wipers, the rubber hardened, and left some light scratches on the windshield. 10. The remote control access does not work, which means the key must be used to lock and unlock the car. No doubt there are other, minor blemishes I have forgotten, but the car is almost sixteen years old.
