Vehicle Detail
This is a 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder in Silver with a tan top and tan leather interior and a 5-speed manual transmission. It has the preferred equipment package with carbon fiber accents on the dash and the color-keyed "Spyder" stitched into the OEM floor mats in copper colored thread. **ADULT OWNED** 100% Stock except for summer tires and the addition of a "shorty" rubber antenna (though the original antenna comes with the car). This car does not have aftermarket body bits or a cold air intake or any sort of engine or transmission modifications. It even has the original radio (which works fine). All the equipment on the car works. I bought this car used in 2005 from the Chevrolet dealer in Old Saybrook, Connecticut as a gift to myself after working a job for a couple years that ate up all my free time as an auto insurance appraiser. It's a magnificent little sports car and a delight to drive. It has spent its happy life tooling around leafy back roads in Connecticut and many summer weekend morning excursions between Cincinnati and Metamora, Indiana. I'm selling it because I came into possession of a second one via an uncle in Arizona who also had an identical appreciation for maintenance-free Japanese roadsters and, well, it's cool having two of these but I don't really need both. The 1.8L engine is the same one they used in the Corolla, so reliability isn't a concern. One of the o2 sensors crapped-out about ten years ago and I replaced it. About five years ago one of the rear shocks popped and leaked during winter storage, so I replaced the rear pair. The front brake pads and rotors have perhaps 500 miles on them. Being somewhat anal about maintenance I replaced the headlamps with OEM new Toyota ones as the ones on the car were getting mildly rock-chipped and had a touch of haze. If you look closely at other ones for sale you'll usually see varying levels of haze/yellowing in the headlights. The ones on this car are crystal clear as you can see from the photos. The last time this car was driven in the rain was 2006 when I went back to Connecticut to retrieve it from storage and drive it to Ohio. It's never been wet again aside from when I wash it. It's been garaged 24/7/365, in the dark, under a car cover except when being taken out for weekend drives. There is no body rust on it. A custom-fitted indoor cover from California Car Covers comes with it. It is the thick "Noah" one so your toy won't get scratched when somebody leans their bicycle up against it. The car is currently equipped with Bridgestone RE11 summer tires. These are super-sticky on dry pavement and provide an amazing handling upgrade over the stock tires. The flip side is that they're definitely summer-grade tires, so if you try to use these in winter you'll die. Or maybe not die, but perhaps suffer some sort of curb mishap. The instructions say "summer use only". Snow-boat it at your own risk. The seats don't have splits or cracks. The rubber moldings are all intact. The CD player and the cassette deck work fine. All the speakers work. The top doesn't have any tears or worn seams, and the rear window isn't separating. It doesn't smell funny. The seals are tight and it doesn't leak water. No surprises. It's not some Craigslist turd. It has a couple small nondescript dings in non-obvious locations of the sort that could probably be removed by a paintless dent repair technician if you cared to do so. One is at the base of the passenger side door and one is forward of the left tail lamp. If you want to come from far away it's not going to break down on you driving home. I mean, it's a 12'6" long sports car that holds you a foot off the pavement, and feels microscopic next to a big rig, and your back will ache after 16 hours straight in it driving it to Denver, but you'll make it home just fine*. (*I recently drove the other one back here from Arizona and it really wasn't that bad aside from a terrifying drive through a violent thunderstorm across eastern New Mexico. I was just using some artistic license.) $200 deposit by Paypal. Payment is cash, in-person. If you want to come pay for it and still have it shipped at your expense I can assist with the arrangements and the car can stay here garaged for a reasonable number of days until they pick it up. That's what the buyer did for the Datsun I just sold here (see my feedback) but then again he was an airline pilot so he got here from Texas for free. If you're in one of the surrounding states and don't have anybody to help you get it home I may be able to assist with delivery. A folder full of service records comes with the car. Car has a clean Ohio title. Ohio requires titles to be notarized for transfer but I have a neighbor who is a notary, so I can help arrange that. Feel free to message me if you have any questions, or it you're local to southwest Ohio and want to come look at it. On Jun-04-18 at 14:38:03 PDT, seller added the following information: Adding some other notes: I got a question about whether the car is a 5-speed manual or if it was the bizarro Sequential-Manual transmission. This car has the regular 5-speed with the three pedals. I've never actually driven the SMT version but from what I gather it's sort of a manual transmission but without a clutch pedal. If you're looking at pictures of other Spyders for sale the SMT ones usually have a big chrome/steel knob on the top of the shifter. In the original write-up I'd mentioned that it was my understanding that this car had been repossessed from the prior owner. After looking at the Carfax I'm doubting my own memory since I've owned this car for so long. The car came with one key so perhaps the repo narrative was something I'd assumed rather than read. The Carfax says this car has a possible history as a rental or lease car. I suspect it was probably a 15k mile/yr lease when it was turned in given that the duration of the first ownership was exactly two years. I also worked for Enterprise in the early 1990's in Connecticut and I don't recall anybody renting any manual transmission vehicles in New England even way back then, so I doubt it was a rental. I've never found any clues in/on/around the car about the prior owners.
