Vehicle Detail

Regretfully, I’m listing my beautiful 1975 BMW R90/6 for sale. This is a meticulously maintained and unmolested, low mileage example of BMW’s iconic airhead. I spent a great deal of time looking for an R90 of this caliber and I hadn’t intended on parting with it, but circumstances dictate that I must do so. I purchased this bike from the original Texas owner who lovingly cared for it until he was no longer able to ride. This bike has never spent a night outdoors. It has covered a mere 29,xxx miles since new which, for these machines, is barely broken in. The R90 is touted as one of the all-around best motorcycles ever produced by BMW and the R90 engine is one of their best and most reliable powerplants. As the owner of many BMW airheads, I have to agree. This particular example was the original owner's pride and joy, as well as mine. It spent the first 39 years of its pampered life in the gentle and dry climate of South Texas and the last four years in the gentler climate of Central Florida, and it shows. Since I had intended for this bike to be a keeper and wanted to combine the power and ride-ability of the R90 with the classic look of the earlier /5, I added the rare (and pricey) BMW toaster tank and matching chrome side covers and had the tank repainted, at great expense. I replaced the trouble prone under tank front master cylinder and cable set up with a new bar mounted unit for the /7 models. I also replaced the brake hose and pads as well as both tires less than 600 miles ago. The bike will come with the original BMW locking hard bag luggage, with key, and mounting brackets, which are in like new condition. The original touring tank and fiberglass side covers will also be included as well as the under tank master cylinder, brake cable and brake lever. The rare and original BMW tool kit, air pump and owner’s manual are included as is the fiberglass tool tray. To improve handling and to also keep the bike period correct, I located and installed a set of real Koni (not Ikon) dial-a-ride rear shocks, correct for the BMW R series bikes. If you’re familiar with these bikes, you know that the choke lever and the one-into-two cable setup for the Bing carbs leaves a lot to be desired. For ease of use, I replaced these with a set of Boxer Metal’s pull chokes specifically designed to address the shortcomings of the original setup. This is a vast improvement over the lever and cable arrangement. The original choke setup will be included and can easily be swapped back in a matter of minutes. The plastic chrome trim strip on the bottom edge of the seat wasn’t up to my standards so I sourced an NOS one but haven’t yet installed it. It will go to the new owner. This bike has never been down, it runs, rides, handles and stops beautifully, and is in superb cosmetic condition. The 898 cc boxer twin starts instantly, is quiet and smooth and has gobs of power and torque. The slight usability improvements that I’ve made can all be easily undone, although I can’t imagine why anyone would choose to. This bike is a true attention getter and stands out in the sea of Harleys and indistinguishable new bikes. If you're a classic motorcycle fan, you already know this, but in the spirit of full disclosure here goes: Although it's in amazing condition for its vintage, this is not a brand new bike and it does have a few chips in the original paint and a few minor cosmetic flaws. Overall, this is a beautiful, low mileage classic that can be reliably ridden and will hold its own with modern bikes. It has a fresh tune up and is ready to ride cross-country, if desired. These were riders’ bikes and as such, their owners rode them. Thus, most examples that come on the market have seen many miles and have had hard lives. Rarely does such a low mileage original example in this condition become available. Bike has a clear Florida title in my name.
