Vehicle Detail
This is a really nice 1962 220SEb. This model Mercedes Benz was first introduced at the Paris World's Fair in 1961. It was an instant hit and Mercedes began to ship the 220SE to US customers. Shown as the cover photo car on 'The Essential Mercedes' book, it is a beautiful example of this new body style that Mercedes introduced in the early 60's. The vehicle was initially shipped from MB Germany to Phoenix AZ where the first owners kept it for 30+ years. Second owner was a physician in Connecticut who purchased the car and had it shipped to the east coast. Story has it, he purchased this car for his wife as a gift but she declined as it was a manual transmission model. He then traded it in at a Cadillac dealership where I saw it and purchased it off the showroom floor. Most Cadillac buyers weren't interested in a then 30+ year old Benz but it looked outstanding sitting in the middle of the showroom! I am the third owner and have had the vehicle for 20+ years. Lots of restoration work was done by the original owners before it left AZ. including paint, chrome, glass, mechanicals and interior upholstery. Receipts exceed $20K invested. I have kept it up over the years. I just purchased my 6th Mercedes (2018 C-43 AMG Cabriolet) and need to reduce the 'fleet' as I don't have sufficient storage area. The 62' 220 was a sunny days daily driver for me but has been used very little in the last 3-4 years as my 'fleet' has grown. So I think it's best to pass it on to the next care taker. The vehicle is currently in heated storage at my office in eastern Massachusetts. Haggerty's most recently released 'MB Price Guide' (Sept-Dec 2017) values this model from a low of $26,200 (grade 4) to a high of $78,600 (grade 1). This particular vehicle would certainly qualify for a Grade 3 at minimum. ($39,900). I have been watching for sales on a 1962 220SE and they seldom show up, or the vehicles offered are 'parts cars' or major projects. That is not the case with this 220SE! NOTE: The wheels (rims) are not OEM, however I have the original 4 OEM hubcaps that will ship with the vehicle. NOTE: Seller will pay for and coordinate the shipping of this vehicle to anywhere in the USA for the successful bidder if the final price exceeds $30K. There is a low reserve! NOTE: Vehicle is also going to be listed in next issue of Mercedes Benz Star magazine for $38K. eBay will most probably be the way to secure a better price for the successful buyer.
