Vehicle Detail

1987 Pontiac Firebird GTAI recently purchased this blast from the past with the intention of spending the winter getting it ready for a summer roadie. The greatest plans some times don't work out. I live in an apartment complex and was planning on renting a second garage to keep and work on this...the management had a different idea. Apparently I'm not allowed to have 2 garages (even though there are vacancies) so now I'm stuck. I didn't buy this to let it sit idle in the snow...it's a nice car that needs to be out there! With that being said, sadly I'm going to let it go. I'm starting it at a crazy low price, but I want it to find a good home. Don't get me wrong though...bid away it's a great car loaded with potential. Back to the Future!! This Trans Am is a great looking, running driving classic that is largely original with no significant modifications made...a true blank canvas. It comes complete with some awesome features such as: Brand new Black Snowflake rims and Goodyear tires...literally under 500 miles on them. There is another brand new rim without a tire so you could have a complete set of 5. This is over $2000 worth a new wheels and tires. But let's not forget originality...you also get the original Gold Snowflake rims...3 old ones with older tires and a one brand new goldie. A new Alpine head unit with a new JL sub. A new center console. A new nose cone (although I don't really think it needs it, there's only one small crack on the current one) with new GTA emblem (which it does need). Interior: Very good and mostly original. The seats are in great condition, no rips or tears. Carpet is nice. Dash is perfect. Center console is new. Overhead console is in great shape. Power windows work great as do the power mirrors. Gauges all function. Door panels are nice with only a single crack on the top of each one. Rear hatch switch works, which is great because the key doesn't. The rear hatch does need new lift supports (believe me you want them, it is heavy. AC is all there, don't know if it needs a recharge or what? Heater works, blower blows. Body: The body is in great condition...no cancer here! Paint is good with only one noticeable chip on the spoiler and one on the hood. Appears to be an older paint job, but a pretty nice one. Weatherstip and windlace could use a refresh, they're not horrible, nothing leaking, but it's about time for new. The hood has brand new lift supports. Undercarriage looks great. Mechanical: This beauty comes equipped with the 5.7 and an automatic transmission. It has four wheel disc brakes which work good and the steering is nice and tight. I've noticed no smoke issues coming from the exhaust, all the lights and electrical works as it should and it starts right up. The car runs strong and is fun to drive, but like most 30 year old cars with original running gear, there are some areas that need addressed. In the relatively short time I've had it, I can see that it needs some very basic things done...plugs, wires, timing adjusted as well as the coil all appear due. Beyond that, I've noticed a couple of leaks that will need to be chased down. I think, but haven't been able to verify due to my workspace limitations, that there may be a leak coming from the oil pressure sending unit behind the distributor. The leak seems to have found its way down to an area of the exhaust and produces a little smoke so it needs addressed sooner than later. Could be really simple or maybe a bit more involved...I just don't know.I think there may be a small leak coming from the transmission dip stick o-ring, but again, I haven't verified. The transmission kick down cable needs adjusted. I also noticed it shifts a little hard once in a while, not bad, but just a bit "off." The fluid looks like it is ready for a service. Overall this is a great looking TA that is in need of a little love. While it's not perfect, it's a hell of a nice place to start. Happy Bidding
