Vehicle Detail

This is not a Concours car but it isn't a junker either. I would give it 8 out of 10 for a car of this vintage. I did not buy this car to sell it. I bought it to restore and drive where I spend my summers, the UP of Michigan. I thought a 77 Eldo would be cool but after driving it for one summer, and maybe 1,000 miles on the curvy back roads of the UP, I realized that it isn't the car for me. I am not a "big" car person. There is just too much weight and inertia for my driving style. The car has less than 54,000 original miles. White with White leather interior. Original paint with no signs of body work. Very good condition. Car has new shocks, battery, radiator, hoses and belts. Seats and dashboard in very good condition. No cracks or rips. Some scuffing of the seats which can be considered normal in a car with 54,000 miles. Originals rugs are excellent and clean. Rear mat is excellent, front mat is in good condition. Minor sign of wear on the drivers side of front mat and some cracking of the rubber surrounding the front mat. Clock works!!! New lock in trunk. Complete liner in trunk. Electric pulldown for trunk works. Gas bottle and cover for original space saver spare although the car now has a standard spare. All manuals. Original jack. Tires are excellent. Original insulation on hood. Carburetor has been rebuilt. A/C blows cold. Automatic climate control works. Radio works. Original manuals. Underbody and all body panels are solid. Rear and front filler panels in very good condition. Chrome is unblemished. From what I can tell, the car has never seen an MI winter. Problems: Cosmetic: There is a minor crack in the steering wheel. It is not in the rim but in the inside. Part of the wood trim underneath the horn button is missing. There is also an extremely minor, about 1 inch, crack in the passenger side rear seat armrest on the body side. I just discovered these yesterday as I was carefully going over the car prior to reposting it. None of these were there or maybe they were so slight as to be unnoticeable when I drove the car from the UP to FL four weeks ago. I suspect they are due to the effect of the heat in FL on a car that probably never got over 70 degrees in its life. Rust: There is surface rust under the stainless trim that runs from the back of the doors and under the rear of the roof. Some cracking of bondo under one side of this trim. I have spoken to several body shops about these problem. They said the bondo was original. In those days, it was not unusual for GM to cover poor welds with bondo. I was also told that rust in this location is a common problem. Apparently, the holes holding the trim were not, in many cases, properly rustproofed. Water would run down the back of the roof, get under the trim and into the holes. This would then cause rust under the paint. It appears the previous owner tried to seal the top edge of the trim but this did not help. Mechanical: The power antenna does not work. It stopped working when I took it out of storage this summer. I probably should have lubricated it before I put it up the first time but I didn't. It appears to be the antenna unit and these are available from salvage yards on eBay. The cruise control does not work properly. This started as I was almost to FL. The cruise control engages but it will not hold a set speed. It just keeps accelerating. The self leveling valve for the rear suspension does not work. This valve is connected to the rear wheels and body and when extra weight is added to the car, the valve allows air from a compressor under to hood to go into the rear air shocks and level the car. The compressor works. As far as I can tell, these valves are not available new or rebuilt. I wanted to get the system to work and tried two units from salvage yards. Neither worked. The mechanic who replaced the shocks and the valves suggested a work around. He installed a tire valve in the plastic of the rear bumper, by the license plate, and connected it to the air lines for the rear shocks. If the car needs to be leveled, it is simply a matter of filling air in the valve. Since I replaced the shocks, I have not had to add air to the rear shocks. There are 78 additional detailed pictures of the car in a Google album. eBay will not permit me to post the address or url in this ad but if you send me your email address, I will send you a link to the album.
