Vehicle Detail
This is a 2002 BMW 540i with the M-sport package and a 6-speed manual. This is truly a driving machine! It's weak cup-holders ensure that you don't bring along a big gulp to distract you from doing what you're supposed to be doing - driving like a boss! It's technology predates the Patriot Act and embedded cellular access so no one can see what you're doing or turn off the car while your experiencing the exhilaration of one of the sportiest sedans ever made. The 4.4l V8 has been enhanced with Stage 2 Dinan software to take advantage of the latent horsepower of this naturally aspirated model of efficient power. And speaking of engine aspiration, the addition of the Dinan Cold Air Intake and an exhaust swap for a new Magnaflow kit give it a nice, ominous rumble, not like the fart cans the kids are using these days. To ensure a rapid transfer of power to the drive train, a lightweight flywheel and clutch were added. The interior is still in great shape. I've cleaned and conditioned the leather a couple of times over the past year to ensure it stays soft and supple. It's not been without its problems, but we have overcome! The engine is not the original that came with the car. That one had a knock down low and ended up being a bad rod-bearing which caused some cylinder scarring. If you know about these engines, you know there is no good (read: cheap) way to refurbish those cylinders. I opted for an engine swap. I ordered a salvage M62 from Bavarian Auto Recycling, Inc (bmrparts dot com). Once the engine arrived, I used a couple of trusted, certified BMW mechanics to do the hard parts like ensuring the internals were all good, changing plugs and gaskets and timing chain guides, and basically taking care of all of the things that one has to do on a 100k motor to get another 100k out of it. Since that was just 1k miles ago, she has a lot of driving left in her before you need to worry too much about the engine. I've only used Mobil One for the two oil changes I've done over the past 12,000 miles I've put on her over the past 2 1/2 years. Exterior-wise, there are some minor dents and dings, two paint blemishes, and lower front bumper that has been abused by people not realizing they should not pull up over the curb. But I'm not the kind of guy that will tell you about a problem without offering a solution. I ordered a new bumper cover from ECS Tuning. It comes with new foglights but is unpainted and uninstalled. I'll include that along with brand new left and right front wheel well liners to complete the install. Other items I have done include changing out the angel eyes bulb for an updated look that matches the standard bulbs. I've replaced the auxiliary fan. I've swapped the rotors for cross-drilled and slotted versions. Why am I parting with it? Too many cars and my wife gets car sick when she rides in it (apparently the "spirited driving" it inspires doesn't translate to the passenger seat). Ebay won't allow me to insert the link.
