Not even the original Boss could claim to be so perfectly engineered by the factory for track performance, yet at the same time so civilized that you can drive it every day. If you want a future collectable, forget the porky GT500 and put this Boss away for posterity. Any American with a pulse will recognize this Mustang instantly. The shape is so full of vintage Ford DNA that could pass a paternity test with Steve McQueen's '67 fastback, and the Boss 302 decals are dead-ringers for Larry Shinoda's original design. The car comes by its credentials honestly, and with the Laguna Seca package, it looks like it just stepped off the race track and hasn't yet peeled off its racing suit. A deep chin splitter is probably great for pinning the car to the pavement at speed, but you should use care around town to keep from scuffing it (obviously the first owner drove with a spotter at all times). The black paint is worlds better than you'd expect from a production car, suggesting that maybe Ford recognizes that these cars will be icons for decades to come. And it all remains in factory-fresh condition. If you had any concerns that this car wasn't the real deal, one glance at those heavily bolstered seats with provisions for 5-point harnesses should dispel them instantly. Ford promotes the car as track ready, and after adding those aforementioned harnesses, you're ready to rock. The steering wheel is wrapped in grippy alacantara, the shifter knob is exactly the right size for your palm, and the gauges tell you exactly what you need to know, when you need to know it. The rest of the interior is standard Mustang, which is to say, pretty darned good all around, and while the original Boss was stripped down to fighting weight, this one includes A/C, power everything, and a kickin' sound system that can actually compete with the bellowing exhaust. Oh, and one other thing: the Laguna Seca is strictly a 2-seater, with the back seat jettisoned for weight savings and the opening reinforced with a cross brace to sharpen handling. The Boss 302 comes by its name honestly, with a 5.0 liter DOHC V8 living under the hood. With 444 horsepower on tap, it rips savagely through the quarter mile in about twelve-and-a-half seconds, completely destroying anything from the '60s, including the mighty Boss 429. They dressed it up for show, but the combat-ready gear is hidden, in the form of adjustable shocks, special springs and sway bars, and massive disc brakes at all four corners that can take the punishment of hot lap after hot lap. The 6-speed manual shifts crisply, feeding a Torsen limited slip and 3.73 gears, so it digs out of corners like it's attached to a giant recoiling rubber band. With a tunable exhaust, you'll find yourself looking for excuses to rip through the gears, and special alloy wheels and grippy Pirelli tires round out the package. The hottest Mustang in years, this Boss 302 is a sure-fire future collectable. With only 11,900 original miles and an awesome color combination, this is the one collectors will want in 40 years.
