Vehicle Detail
Offered for purchase is a 1970 Pontiac GTO 455 HO convertible. One of only 241 built, this is an excellent opportunity to own one of the most powerful GTO's ever made. This is a very intact and largely complete car. This car deserves a full restoration. However, it can be enjoyed for what it is right now. Please review the below listing sheet for further details on the car, as well as the pictures for appearance and condition. If you have further questions or requests for photographs, please contact us and we are happy to oblige. Important items of note: Original Factory build sheet included in photographsEngine block and cylinder heads are properly coded and date coded for a 1970 455 HO. HOWEVER, it was never stamped at the factory with the sequential to match it to the VIN. In this area there are no markings or indications that the block was ever stamped. We do believe that this is the original 455 to the car, based on it's casting numbers and date codes and the build sheet. The car has an older repaint which has numerous chips, scratches and bubbles. Please examine the photos carefully and if you require more please ask us. The underbody, frame, floor pans and trunk are in remarkably good condition. The car does not have a radioThe car has an aftermarket Edelbrock aluminium intake manifold, Holly carburetor and chrome air cleaner. Original intake manifold, breather and a Quadrajet carburetor are included, and can be seen in pictures. The car has aftermarket headers. We do not have the original exhaust manifolds.BRUCE A. Apologies to those trying to see the first one, we didn't realize it wasn't legible. We have cleaned and checked the rear axle tube. It is stamped XT, which matches the code on our build sheet. This translates to a 3.07:1 Safe-T-Track 12 bolt unique to the 455 equipped Pontiac GTO's.We have heard from a number of you with Freemont, CA built cars that the VIN sequential may well be stamped near the engine code on the upper block area. We have cleaned this area thoroughly and can read legibly only "16" and have made numerous attempts to find more, to no avail. We invite you to come down and try for yourself, and God be with you.At your suggestion, we also found (under a good deal of grease) a number on the transmission on the drivers side above the pan rail. It is also worn and only partially legible. The legible portion that can be read is as follows: "...22591". The VIN is 242670Z122519. We think the guy who stamped the number was a little tired and possibly dyslexic. You must draw your own conclusions. The intake manifold is Pontiac casting number 9799058. The casting date reads F080. It is cast iron. It is for a Quadrajet carburetor. We are antique car people and understand the difficulty of buying a car far away. Please call us or write us, and we will do our best to give you a good answer to all of your inquires. Or better yet, come to visit us and inspect the car in person. Thanks!Bruce and BrianOn May-08-15 at 12:36:57 PDT, seller added the following information: **UPDATE 5/8/2015** Today's update: An eagle-eyed Pontiac GTO enthusiast pointed out that if this car was in fact built in California and sold by a California dealer, then it should have a unique to California charcoal canister mounted to the core support on the passenger side. The odds of this 45 year old plastic canister being intact and under the hood are of course long. We were extremely delighted to find that very canister (now shown in our additional photograph) with all of it's original plumbing still intact. We realize that such a rare and perishable component still intact on this vehicle probably raises it's value tens of thousands of dollars...However, we have not upped our reserve in anticipation of your generosity.Again, thanks for your calls and emails. On May-09-15 at 18:25:21 PDT, seller added the following information: **UPDATE 5/9/2015**In case you were wondering about values... https://www.hagerty.com/valuationtools/HVT/VehicleSearch/Report?vbe=42664 (if it doesn't link, just copy and paste the address into your web browser)
