Vehicle Detail
For sale is my 1972 Porsche 914. This auction is no reserve and will sell to the highest bidder. I've owned this car for about a year, and it's been my daily driver for about 6 months (and the only car that I own since August 2014). I work from home, so alot of my "daily" driving consists of trips to the grocery store, running errands, meeting up with friends, taking my girlfriend out to dinner, etc. I've also taken this car on several long distance trips to visit friends and family. I've driven from Raleigh, NC to Fort Mill, SC (6hr round trip); from Raleigh to Charlotte, NC (5hr round trip); from Raleigh to Mooresville (5hr round trip), NC; and from Raleigh to Denver, NC (6hr round trip). The car has always performed flawlessly and is happy to drive on back country roads or down the highway. My trip to Denver, NC was to visit Black Forest Racing. I went there and back in the same day (6 hour round trip) down I-40 and I-77 at 70-75mph the entire time and the car did it with ease. It's a strong motor and trans in this car, and it wants to drive! The car has a 1.7 engine with factory D-jet and stainless steel heat exchangers, and has been modified with a later model side-shift transmission. The only real issue with the drivetrain is that it is occasionally difficult to get into 1st gear, but that's a pretty common occurrence with 914's. Also, the pedal cluster could use a rebuild. I do have a set of bronze pedal bushings that will come with the car. The trans synchros are all in excellent condition with no grinding. I'm a strict double-clutcher so there has been the absolute minimum wear on the synchros under my watch (and honestly if you're not double clutching, you're not driving a manual correctly!) This car has been modified with fiberglass fender flares, fiberglass front and rear bumpers, and fiberglass rocker covers. The front suspension is entirely 911; with 911 control arms, spindles, struts, 5 lug hubs, vented rotors, and "M" calipers. The rear suspension has Koni shocks, 5 lug rotors (NOT re-drilled 4 lugs), stock 914 calipers...plus early 911 4-bolt 108mm trans output flanges, CV's, and stub axles. The axle shafts themselves are new from Pacific Customs, and are 28 spline 20.25" chromoly to fit the 28 spline early 911 CV's. The car has 15x7 Fuchs on all 4 corners. There's quite a bit of early 911 suspension components on this car, which in and of itself is quite valuable. The interior is stock black vinyl, with a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, and a sparse carpet-free interior with a pair of very nice condition coco mats. The fresh air controller levers do control where the fresh air is routed to (feet, dash vents, or defrost vents), however the fresh air blower motor does not work. I do not know if the motor is bad or if it is just not hooked up. There were no heater tins or heater blower motor on the car when I bought it, and they are still not there now that I am selling it. The exterior of the body appears in very nice condition, and the paint is a single stage gloss that looks good from a few feet away but it does have orange peel when you get close. The frame does have some sag, however it is not extreme. The doors still open and close fine with two full grown adults in the car. It can be difficult to get the driver's door window to tuck into the weather seals when the window is rolled all the way up. What I do is roll the window down a little, close the door, then roll it up from the inside. From the outside it can take a couple tries closing the door while pushing on the window to get the window to fit into the seals correctly. Now the good stuff....rust. This car does have it. There have been repairs made to this car by previous owners. However it is a patchwork: a patch here, a patch there. Both outer longs have been replaced and are very clean (see pics). Still there are some areas that have rust-through. Both the front and rear wheel wells have some small holes. The floor pan is ok on the passenger side, however the driver's side has rust-through under the pedal cluster and is soft behind the driver's seat. There is a pretty bad rust-through spot on the underside of the driver's side inner long (the previous owner used rubber cement to glue a strip of metal over the hole - see pics). The passenger side inner long appears ok. The hell hole has some rust-through on the driver's side. The passenger side of the hellhole has had repair done (the battery support is new, and the top of the longitudinal member is relatively new), however the engine shelf on that side still needs to be installed. The front and rear trunks are in exceptionally good condition with no rust. All suspension mounting points on this car are SOLID. I've chucked this car around more corners than I can count at speeds that probably weren't safe, and I've never had an issue. The underside does have gobs of undercoating. What this car needs in order to be an exceptional car, is someone to do a professional floor-pan replacement, a professional longitudinal replacement, and a professional job patching the small holes that are in the wheel wells. However, as it is, it is a car that you can drive every day and still enjoy. Here's a list of all that's been done to the car while in my possession: -oil and filter change every 3 months with Castrol GTX 20w50 and K&N HP-2004 -installed new seatbelts with airplane style latches -replaced all D-jet vacuum hoses with new OE german and routed them correctly -sourced the missing ebrake handle and reconnected and adjusted ebrake cables -replaced oil cooler seals -replaced ignition coil with Pertronix -replaced distributor cap and rotor -replaced spark plugs with NGK BP5ES -replaced spark plug cables with Magnecore 8mm -installed Pertronix electronic ignition -set timing -installed 4 new Kumho 225/50/15 tires -Installed new 19mm Master Cylinder, MC banjo bolt fitting, front metal lines, and front flex hoses with braided SS (all from PMB Performance) -have new rear braided SS flex hoses, and hose to caliper hard line (not yet installed, comes with car) -brake fluid flushed and bled -replaced throttle body gasket -replaced intake manifold gaskets -replaced all 4 intake runner boots -replaced all injector seals (4 large and 4 small) -injectors rebuilt by Witchhunter -adjusted valves to .006 -replaced front main targa seal, side targa seals, rear targa seal with fuzzy, front trunk main and bulkhead seals, rear trunk main and bulkhead seals, window scraper seals, door end cap seals, and inner door seals (all from 914rubber) -sourced rubber firewall sound insulator, upholstered back pad, and center arm rest (all were missing when I bought the car) -cleaned and re-greased distributor -replaced fuel filter -cleaned oil sump strainer, and re-installed with new strainer gaskets -installed new 28 spline chromoly axles and regreased CV joints I bought this car long distance from a guy who turned out to be a scam artist ('esses62' here on ebay, 'scotty boy' on 914world) who claimed all rust repair had been done professionally, that the car had a show-quality paint job, and that it needed nothing. Needless to say, I got hosed. I paid $9K for the car, and the list of items above cost me between $1500 and $2K. So you can see I'm losing a good deal of money on this car. I need to move on to something new, and there's no way I'm going to get my money back on this car, so it's time to let it go to someone else. It's a fun car, and a great project for someone who has the expertise to weld, or for someone who's got deep pockets to pay a shop to fix all the metalwork issues. It's also a great car for someone who wants a car they don't have to worry about, and that they can take out on weekends and toss around corners. The car also has mounting points on the door sills for a roll cage, so it could also make for a great track or autocross car. I've tried to describe the car to the best of my abilities. If you have any questions, or would like any additional photos, please don't hesitate to ask. Also, here is a photobucket album with over 80 photos of the car: Porsche 914 photobucket album
