Vehicle Detail
Here's your chance to own a piece of Volvo history. This is a genuine 1983 Volvo 242 "Flathood" turbo. If you are looking at this auction listing, you probably already know something about these cars. These two-door 240 series cars arrived in US dealerships in 1983 as a result of the need to manufacture and sell a minimum number of cars to qualify them for racing in a production class. This is one of 500 cars Volvo built and sold in order to meet the "homologated" status for racing in the production ETCC (European touring car championships) with a new model turbo and intercooler. I've owned the car since 2009 and kept it garaged. I think I am probably the third or fourth owner. I don't know anything about its previous existence other than the fact that I bought it from a guy in Arizona, and he told me before that it was in California. This has always been a sun-belt car - there is virtually no rust on it. Rockers, doors and wheel wells are all solid. Two very small rust areas in the floor have been sanded, painted, and patched with epoxy putty and POR-15. Expect some dings and scratches on the body - the car is 31 years old, after all! The interior is pretty nice, with no rips, tears or stains in the seats or carpeting. I have never smoked in the car, and there are no nasty odors. Seats are the blue corduroy type of fabric, which might have been the most durable seat coverings Volvo ever used. Door panels and pockets are solid. Dash has the usual cracks, but is covered with one of the fabric covers that IPD sells. Power windows go up and down. All gauges work as intended. Overdrive works, but the little green "5" overdrive indicator on the dash does not light up. Power antenna works, but can be erratic. I've used only synthetic 10W-30 or 5W-40 oil with Mann W917 filters. There is Mobil-1 ATF in the tranny and Mobil-1 gear oil with the appropriate additive in the limited slip differential. The car is being sold as "True Mileage Unknown" - when I purchased the car, the odometer was not working. I replaced it with a working unit which now shows approximately 190K, but the actual mileage is unknown. Assume that it is at least 200K. The drivetrain is essentially stock, although I have done the following upgrades: - Installed a new engine wiring harness from Dave Barton. The harness was a "new old stock" updated harness that I bought some years earlier for another 240 turbo I owned at the time, but never installed. - New in-tank fuel pump and filter sock. - New timing belt, tensioner and water pump. - New ball joints, tie rod ends and steering rack boots. - IPD 25mm sway bars front and rear were installed to replace the stock Volvo "turbo bars". - New 205-60-15 BF Goodrich Touring T/A tires installed in 2009. Less than 5,000 miles on them. There is a fifth new BFG T/A on a good Virgo rim for the spare. - New "old-style" brake and clutch pedal pads from IPD. - Bilstein HD shocks and struts. - Hella H4 and H1 halogen conversion headlights. - New "euro-style" clear/amber front turn signal lenses - New Blaupunkt speakers installed in the rear deck. The car has an older Pioneer AM/FM/CD head unit which works well, and the stock Volvo 4" speakers in the front doors. The three worst things about the car: - Turbo is noisy. It makes boost, and the car can be driven "as is" but if I were keeping the car, I'd rebuild or replace the turbo and replace the electronic factory boost controller with a manual one. - The paint, at least on the left front fender and driver's door, is not original. Some of it is flaking, which makes it sound a lot worse than it looks. From 10-15 away, you can't see it. There are two other small areas - under the driver's side front turn signal and on the passenger side mirror - where paint has flaked off. - Although all the components of the air conditioning system are present, it will not hold vacuum, so I have not charged it with refrigerant, and the a/c does not currently work. I replaced the expansion valve, receiver/dryer and all associated O-rings in an effort to get it to hold vacuum. But it still has the original York compressor. If I were keeping the car, I would probably try and replace this with a rotary-style compressor and bracket from a later model 240, or at least a rebuilt York unit. Right now it has the IPD a/c "bypass" kit on it (different belt and pulley to run the power steering pump directly off of the crank pulley). Included in the sale are: - An essentially compete fuel injection system with piping, injectors, fuel distributor, control pressure regulator, etc. from an '85 245 turbo that I parted out. This includes a good spare fuel injection ECU and ignition ECU - A known good spare distributor with Hall sensor - Known good ignition coil, plug wires and distributor cap - A rebuildable Garrett turbo, partially disassembled. - A complete set of Rensi plastic floor trays, front and rear. - A fairly complete set of suspension bushings, including some polyurethane trailing arm bushings that I never got around to installing. The car is completely street legal, currently registered and insured, and while not used as a "daily driver," it has been driven on a regular basis. However, it is being sold with absolutely no warranty expressed or implied. There will be no refunds - all sales are final. If you want to fly into either the Tampa or Clearwater/St. Petersburg airports to pick up the car and drive it home, I will be happy to meet you and wish you good luck. I see no reason why the car would not get you home, but please keep in mind that this is a 31 year old car with plenty of 31 year old parts and likely has somewhere in the neighborhood of 200,000 miles on it! You might make it home without a problem, or you might break down at the end of my street, in which case you can call AAA - don't call me! Probably best to trailer or dolly it, or have it shipped if you are going a significant distance. Shipping is entirely the responsibility of the buyer. Also, I am willing to store the car inside my garage at no charge for up to two weeks from the end of the auction until Monday, October 20. That is absolutely the last day the car can be picked up, no exceptions. No financing and no credit cards accepted - if you bid on this vehicle, it is assumed that you have the funds available. A deposit of $500.00 must be made via Pay Pal within 24 hours of the auction ending. Also, the high bidder must contact me via email within 24 hours of the end of the auction to make arrangements to pay the balance in full within seven (7) days. Pay Pal is to be used for the deposit only. The balance can be paid by cash in person, bank wire transfer or cashiers check. No exceptions.
