Vehicle Detail
This is a 1969 SS396 Chevelle that needs a frame off restoration. It’s a factory 4-speed car with a 350 horse 396 motor, FACTORY SUPER SPORT! It’s been 5 years since I’ve ran the numbers but I had a chevelle fanatic check it out for me. Everything matched and it was a factory original barn find. It IS A NUMBERS MATCHING SUPER SPORT big block 396 in every way. We’ve checked every number on the car and motor that we can find and they all match. We started the job a couple of years ago and I had a professional body shop doing the initial body work and they just got so far before getting behind and I eventially picked the car up to take it to another body shop. Of course, that never happened. My wife just had a baby, which was a total surprise because we have a 18 year old fixing to go to college and a 15 year old fixing to start driving, now a newborn. That being said, I won't be able to finish the car. I looked for this car about 5 years too, but now the dream will have to wait... Here's what I know about the car: It's a 1969 hard top that came out with a vinyl top. The best of my memory, it was factory midnight blue with a black vinyl top (you can run the cowl tag picture and see what it is). None of the top remained when I got the car but it had some rust where the top was ripped and water got under the top and stayed there long enough to rust it with some pretty bad pitting. Enough so that the body shop would not bother with trying to fix the car unless I also installed a new roof skin. We had trouble finding the roof skin but finally did find one about 6 months ago, which is when construction stopped on the car. The new roof skin came from a catalog company and is the only non NOS product we have for the car at this point. The builder ordered both right and left rear quarter panels, inner and outer wheel wells for both sides which were all supposed to be American made factory parts. This, however, I can not guarantee because I didn’t order them myself. I do know I have $5000 worth of metal for the car and any piece it needs, we have already received. The passenger front fender still has the factory NOS Chevrolet sticker on it! They sent me two of the same fender so I sold the other one on Ebay for $900, the quality parts are hard to find for these cars anymore but I was going to do it right. So here’s what I have NEW for the car: (1) Chevrolet stamped factory front NOS fender (1) Drip rail metal shelf (1) Solid piece trunk metal (2) Rear right and left wheel well, inner and outer (1) 1968-1969 Roof skin (1) Passenger fender bottom metal replacement piece (already tacked to the factory fender) The welding is not completely done on it yet (1) All new floor panels, front and rear cabin floor. These are measured out and the tack welding is started on small areas of the panel just to hold it in place. (1) Front right frame horn. The factory frame had one bad rusty spot on the front of the right frame horn and it was replaced with a factory piece of a donor car. It is measured and installed by tack welding but is not completely welded yet.(*)Multiple, multiple parts from a 1968 donor car and another 1969 donor car, I junked them both to build this car and have most of the parts from them that were any good. They ALL go with this sale. Here is some of the work I have completed on the project up to this point. I had the factory, numbers matching 396 motor rebuilt by Crossville Machine and Tool. He’s built motors for me before and the motor is done right! He is the best motor guy we have in our town. The motor has been completely went through, all new pistons and rings, heads were rebuilt and all new springs and seals. No miles are on the motor at this point, it’s ready to install and crank right up! The rebuild kit alone was around $2000 and the motor, redecked, honed and new freeze plugs, everything you need for a quality job was close to $3500 invested in the whole rebuild. Even when I had the block decked for perfect flats, he stopped short of the block numbers so car buffs could easily see it’s a numbers matching car. I have a brand new rebuilt 4 speed transmission (please see pictures.) I bought this transmission off of Ebay 4 years ago for this project. It’s the only thing not original with the car. BUT, the transmission is what would have came out in the factory 4-speed car and the seller ran the numbers down to July, 1969, One month before the motor was made thus making it indestuigishable from the factory tranny. The car was a factory 4 speed car by the way. The transmission was newly rebuilt when I bought it and has never been ran in a car. The seller said he used all new, American made parts for the rebuild and rebuilt every gear in the tranny to run like new. So, no problems there. The frame on the car is in overall good shape. As stated earlier, the front right frame horn was rusted through nearly and we decided to replace it instead of fixing the hole. We used a donor car to get the good frame horn and installed it to get the correct measurements. It’s all ready to go and be finish welded into place, it’s just tacked into place for now. I have a factory bench seat and factory rear seat that came out of a donor car. The front bench seat is as the plate says it was from the factory and it had the large bent shifter (which I don not have the shifter handle I don’t think. There is a shifter floor panel however, that also came from the donor car. I have both doors and they are factory doors. They are both still painted so I do not know what shape the doors are in, I didn’t make it that far but I think they are in ok shape. I have a SS hood that is factory original in good shape overall and factory trunk lid that has a couple of small holes on the inside of the lid. These would be no problem to fix up. Of course, all NEW floor panels for the trunk as well as floor panels for the cab. The firewall was bead blasted and painted with etchlok green primer to make sure it was all good. It is and the factory VIN plate hasn’t been touched or bothered in any way. It was taped up while all of the work was going on around it. I have many many parts for the car and some duplicate parts that came from the donor car. I got anything that was useful off of the donor car and then junked it so you will get a lot of extra parts you won’t need. There was really nothing left of it. I have a couple of dashes and multiple interior parts, many that are useful. As you can see from the pictures, however, it will need the interior completely recovered. I do not have a headliner or dash pad, just stuff like that. A interior kit would take care of everything you needed for the car. I have tried to take pictures of most everything I have for the car but I’m still in the process of finding it all so there WILL BE MORE PARTS you’ll get with the car besides what you see in the pictures. Some parts are stored upstairs in my loft, some are at a friends house, some are still at the builder’s garage and some are in a storage building I rented in town… I went around and took as many pictures as I could but there are more than enough parts to put the car completely back together. It has factory 1969 SS mag wheels as well. I’ll try to post a picture of them later. If I were guessing, and of course I am, you may be missing 1K to 2K worth of parts that could easily be found online. That being said, I have extra grills, extra headlight bezels, stuff like that from the donor car that could be sold off if you don’t need them. I’ll find every part I have for the car in the next few days and all will be ready for pick-up at auction end. You’ll get every part I have for chevelles, If I find a extra dash pad, I’ll give it to you. There are two wiring harnesses but I personally would throw them both in the garbage and get a new one. They are cheap enough anymore that installing a new one on a frame off restoration is well worth it. As far as the body, motor and transmission, these are all new and rebuilt. I have receipts with the car the buyer will get and a clear title from Georgia that is not salvage or anything. Please ask any questions you may have before bidding! Your bid IS a contract and Ebay as well as myself take it seriously. I believe if you do people right and do what you say, it’ll come back to you. Bring a BIG trailer, I have lots of extra parts if you want them. I have the factory SS Steering wheel and column, all kinds of stuff I didn’t get pictures of including the AC and all the hoses. When I bought the car, it was all together and rolling but not running. We never could get it to start so I decided to take it down and get the motor looked at first, without a good motor, you have nothing. The guys said it was good so I had it rebuilt first. They got it all together and it’s ready to go so I started on the rest of the car. You can see as far as I got. Overall $15,500 invested so far and I know I won’t get anywhere near that so win this car and finish it! It’s a shame to have a TRUE SS 396 Chevelle sitting in this shape. Most of the investment has been done, other than your time, I bet you wouldn’t have to invest another 2K in this car and it’d be done. I hate to sell it but I’ve got to. No tire kickers please, I’ve had some health issues lately and if your serious about buying the car, you can call me at 931-787-5949. I doubt I’ll be able to answer most of the time but leave me a message and I’ll get back to you when I get a break. Thanks for looking and good luck!
