Ask all the questions before biding/buying.****Pardon the details below, however, better spend time here than driving around only to see junk as there are a lot of junk W123 out there**If you are shopping for a Classic W123 Benz, focus on the '85 models, [Palomino interior is a plus] it is the best year Mercedes-Benz produced the W123 300DT, and for the good ones prices are only going up. some of the reasons are:85s have different rear differentials which make for better highway driving85s have the seat-belt pretensioners.Have better AC condensers.The emissions controls on the 85s are more advanced than earlier models.85's also got a Valve Modulator which changes shift firmness based on boost level.The '85 models use a different radiator.The '85 300D also got the "Klima" relay for the climate control.Having said that, the following is the Good and the Bad about this beautiful Classic '85 300DT, and PRICED ACCORDINGLY, keep in mined over 97% of W123 have a list of good & bad, unless the owner is hiding the bad. As to the remaining 3%, prepare yourself to pay $7000 to $14000.The Good:AutoCheck report score 44 while similar vehicles score 15 to 36.Very reliable, Engine is in perfect condition, with original owner manual and paper.Mileage is original and very low 142500, Odometer stopped working 03/13/2014 and have the photos since I bought it for proof.No blow-by.Great engine compression with perfect oil pressure.Does not burn oil.Before buying this car, I have shopped for 6 months and have seen many, the owner of this car is a Mercedes enthusiast, hence was garaged with MBCA sticker on windshield.Interior is in very good condition, the passenger seat, back seats, door panels and headliner are practically in new condition. The driver seat and arm rest has wear.Dash is in very good condition see pics. car has been garaged most of it's life.4 new tires installed Feb 18 2014 with less than 600 miles on them.AutoCheck report shows this car has been in small Texan cities all of it's life, hence the low mileage. See pic. of report.According to visual inspection and Auto check report NO accidents.Car has been repainted, and paint is presentable and in very good condition.Sunroof works, however in cold days if you open it fully, you need several presses to close it, it closes with no problem in warm days.The following maintenance between Feb and June 2014: Valve adjustment and new valve head gasket. 5/24/2014Oil/filter and air filter change 2/10/2014 Shell Rotella 15/40.Diesel purge with Molly diesel.New pre-filter and main fuel filters.New fuel lines.New air filter.New air filter housing mounts.New left ball joint and tie rod end.New right ball joint.Alignment 4/13/2014 [drives like an arrow.]New upper right control arm.New vacuum rubber connectors.ALDA banjo bolt serviced and cleaned.All shifter bushings have been replaced, {the ones under the shifter console and the ones under the car}Floor mats professionally cleaned.Full hand wax 2/18/2014.All of the following work: Tach, Speedometer, Oil pressure gauge, Fuel Gauge, Clock and even Cruise control.No cracks in the wood paneling.A/C works, and blows form all vents.A/C has been retro fitted to the new R-134Driver side window and side window works fine, I would not play with the back windows much.The Bad. As mentioned previously, the back windows are not operating smoothly.If you want a smoother shifting, you need a transmission modulator valve, it is $48 form mercedessource.com shifting on these cars are not as smooth as gasoline cars.The normal and almost unavoidable oil drops that is a common on high compression Diesel engines.When it rains hard, water in the trunk, could need trunk seal $29 on ebay. Out of the 6 cars I saw before buying this one, all had the same issue.Lastly, The youngest of the W123 Benz is about 29 years old, so compare the good the bad and the ugly of each car you are buying, and the price you are paying.
