Vehicle Detail
You are viewing a 1968 Triumph TR-250, without doubt one of the most enjoyable and desirable sports cars ever created, and as an extremely low production car built just one model year between the TR-4A and the TR-6, the car is the best of both. This example is fitted with the very desirable and sought after Laycock de Normandville electric overdrive, and this is the correct "A" type which operates on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. The overdrive is fully reconditioned (see below). This car needs nothing for you to step in and enjoy it, drive it, and cherish the joy of ownership. I have owned this car for five years during which time it has been restored to an incredibly high standard mechanically, and to a high driver quality standard cosmetically. This car has won many club level shows and accolades, but is not in concours condition as the car was built to be driven and enjoyed. Everything on the car works correctly, as delivered new; all the gauges perform accurately and smoothly having been rebuilt or reconditioned and recabled . There is an original British Leyland Triumph AM radio with a single speaker as delivered though the speaker is new. Inside, there is a very high grade carpet set fitted, a new correct Robbins top with the unique striping for the TR-250, and genuine leather seats. The wood dash has been refinished to a very high quality and the only blemish to the interior is a small vinyl crack on the radio tower support. The dash top and all the crash pads below are new. During the rebuild, the engine was completely rebuilt by Frank Monise Motors in Montclair, CA who also fitted the new clutch, completely rebuilt the front and rear suspensions, and installed a new wiring harness after the body had been removed from the car, walnut blasted for corrosion, and fitted to the immaculate and rust free, damage free chassis you see in the photos. The correct Stromberg carburetors were rebuilt with new throttle shafts, etc, and a rebushed distributor was also sourced along with the fuse box and voltage regulators to correct standards. I certify this chassis to be undamaged and rust free in every respect and inspections are welcome during the auction. Prior to the repaint in Triumph Racing Green, two rust free doors were located and any other corrosion, however minor, was addressed by replacing any fender or panel showing even slight damage. There was a small amount of corrosion on the firewall, and also the trunk bottom, as well as at one door opening above the new rocker panels. The battery box is excellent. The top panels around the fuel filler and between the trunk, or bootlid and fenders are all new Heritage panels. I am extremely picky about build quality, and nothing was left to chance on the mechanicals of this car. See below. The body of the car is beautiful with slight variances in door gaps that could be adjusted out. Gaps at the trunk and hood are excellent. Panel fit overall is good to excellent and the overall result is outstanding. Paint quality is very good to excellent in keeping with factory, not concours, standards, with several coats of the base color having been applied to a bare metal body exterior. internals, and bare engine bay. The car has the very rare Rostyle original wheels which have been retained, along with Michelin Redline Tires in good condition. The brake master cylinder, servo unit, and all hydraulic and cooling systems in the car are brand new. Additionally, look closely at the photographs to see the correct original Lucas alternator which was only used on TR250 cars, and some MGCs, and has been unavailable for years. The unit was sourced by me and professionally rebuilt with a new stator and genuine Lucas components. We all know the collectible status of the TR-250. Occasionally some rough or complete basket case cars show up, and still bring strong prices. The cost to restore those cars far exceeds the reserve on this one. The reserve here is set to make the car attainable by and enthusiast like myself, who loves the cars. If you are looking for a trailer queen to invest in, drag to a few shows, and make some money as these cars climb up to "E" Type status, this isn't it. This car wants to be driven and enjoyed, and it was built that way. It is reliable, runs very strong, and has no mechanical faults. It also looks fantastic with its correct TR-250 striping, badging, and trim. There are a few TR-250s around with incorrect wheels, no stripes, TR-6 seats, and other rough edges that are still commanding big money. There is also a big premium now for the correct 'A" type overdrive. This car has it all. I am the past President of a large Triumph club; I have enjoyed owning and working on Triumphs for over 40 years, and my cars have been featured in books (like Original TRIUMPH TR4,5&6 by Bill Piggott) and magazines like TRiumph World. This is the 4th TR250 I have owned, and it is the best of them all. I am selling due to space limitations with the arrival of a rare TR-3B, and the completion of a wonderful TR4A-IRS which I rescued just prior to it being scrapped. I will probably deeply regret letting this car go, but it is my hope it is driven and enjoyed. It is already certain to appreciate. All the above is documented. Email questions at any time and thanks for looking.
