1966 VW Fastback!!! Here is one of the most original VWs that I have ever come across. This 1966 VW Fastback is a one family owned car since new and has been in dry, hot Phoenix Arizona since 1966. This car is an all original, accident free VW fastback that is highly original and has an interesting past. This car was sold new here in Arizona but as a European delivery. The previous owners actually took delivery of this car in Germany at the factory as part of a European delivery program!!! This is fairly common now on new luxury cars but I have never come across a classic VW that was part of this program. Once the car arrived here in the US, it was driven across California to Arizona and has stayed here ever since. Once back in Arizona A/C was installed by the dealer (stamped in the book, but A/C since removed) and was maintained there for years. The result of this is a highly original and unmolested car. This car looks to retain most if not all of its original paint and has a lovely patina to it. Really nothing has changed on this car except seat covers have been placed over the interior. Due to our hot and dry climate I do not think you will find a more rust free original pan... but due to our hot try weather... the seats and door panels have seen better days. They are original and someone could save the panels with patience and glue... or you could spend about 300 dollar and get all new interior panels. The amazing thing is the dash is all original and un-cracked! This is truly an amazing car and is an absolute time capsule. The car has only covered about 84k miles since new an has been regularly maintained. The car starts up and runs like a top as the carbs were recently rebuilt. This is the most original VWs I have seen in years. The cars underside is beautiful and in practically perfect condition. These cars are excellent cars to drive and enjoy either daily or just for fun on the weekends. They are beautiful to look at, rare to see, easy and even fun to maintain due to there simplicity. This is a beautiful collector quality car that will surely make its new owner very happy! Click to enlarge Exterior: This great looking Fastback is still wearing its original white paint and for being 48 years old... it has held up fairly well. The paint is slightly oxidized and could use a polish... much of its luster and shine will return but I think it kind of looks nice with the patina. Everything on the car lines up great. This is an accident free car. I have been all around it and under it and I can not find any signs of accidents. There is dry dirt/dust... but thats about it! Also there is no rust save for light surface rust that is cosmetic. Its amazing to see how well the chrome and stainless has held up. The rear bumper has made light friends with something in the past but its chrome is shockingly nice and not really pitted. The dry desert southwest has really preserved this car. Overall I really like the survivor look to this car and I think it is beautiful as is. Click to enlarge Interior: The interior of this car is original... but has seen better days. The seats and door panels do have seat covers on them, but after pulling the drivers side back rest off and discovering rips I figured I would just leave the rest on. The seats would likely need new seat coves for about 350 dollars and someone could spend sometime to try to get some more years out of the door panels or for about another 300 or so you could get all new door panels. While the dry desert heat is great for the metal it is tough on the soft components. Amazingly the dash is in near perfect condition! Click to enlarge Engine: The original 1600cc engine remains and starts up and runs like a top!!! The engine blows no smoke on start up or while driving. The engine runs so smooth and quite its hard to tell if its even running. The twin solex carbs were recently rebuilt and the car actually drives pretty well.The brakes have great feel, are very responsive and stops GREAT! The car rides down the road well and steers great. The tires are very very very old and should be replaced if you intend to drive this time capsule. A nice idea might be to purchase a second set of wheels and save this set for display at a car show.
