Vehicle Detail

1965 Ford Mustang “D Code” automatic Here is a very solid 1964.5 Ford Mustang “D code” which is a 1964.5 4v 289. 1964½ is a term that is used by Mustang owners and enthusiasts to describe the earliest Mustangs ever built. Although Ford never officially used the term "64 and a half" to describe these cars, they did arrive on the market in early 1964, before other true 1965 models. The first Mustang actually rolled off the Dearborn, Michigan assembly line on March 9, 1964. This was in the middle of the normal 1964 model year, giving rise to the common term "1964½" Mustang. Not much and yet everything looks the same; close up, they host quite a number of differences. The ’64-1/2 Mustangs have always been ’65 Mustangs--always. As enthusiasts, we call them "’64-1/2" because it’s easier to say, but it’s also a cult thing. Early ’65 Mustangs have the distinction of being the first block of Ponies ever produced. They were an integral part of the Mustang madness that swept the world in 1964. And if you have a "’64-1/2" built at Dearborn, that makes it even more significant in the relative scheme of things, because it was born in the motherland. About the car: The Mustang runs down the road cool, straight and effortlessly. It has great acceleration and stops on a dime with front disc brakes and power steering. The not so good: The front passenger door window rubs the rear window just enough to stick a little. I keep the rear window down just about 1/8” to avoid this. It could probably be adjustedTransmission has a seal leak, not super bad, but enough to notice. (Shifts fine)Sometimes (not every time) you must push the floor shifter handle a little further in park to engage the neutral safety switch in order to start it (or neutral). No big deal to swap the switch out or adjust. The body has 3-4 small blisters and cracks in paint here and there. It is “driver quality” which I would not hesitate to take to the cruise in or a show. I rate it a 7.5 out of 10.Drivers front frame rail has a ping pong ball size hole in it. Other than that, the frame and floors are rock solid. The good stuff: The drive train is original and has all been rebuilt in 2004 with less than 800 miles on it since being rebuilt. Lack of driving has called the trans seal to leak. No engine smoke, no engine leaks, no ticks, knocks or any other weird sounds. Just a nice throaty exhaust system and tight sounding engine.Tires are full tread. Rims are ok looking CragersAll glass windows go up and down effortlessly. All exterior chrome looks newThe paint is shiny and what I’d call 10 footer. I can tell there was no chrome on the car when it was painted. No evidence of Bondo anywhere. All weather seals and rubbers have been replaced.Front power disc brakesFront suspension all rebuilt. The interior is a 8.75 out of 10. The carpet is faded from being 10 yrs old. The dash, upholstery, headliner and all gauges are amazingly clean and appear all new. All lights work, horn and wipers work, Newer headers and exhaust. The exhaust sounds great!! Like a classic muscle car should. The floor pans, frame in the front and rear are rock solid (except as noted above). Problem areas on Mustangs were beneath the battery and where the rear leaf springs tie into the frame. All of it is rust free. Trunk drop down extensions are all solid. There appears to be no filler in this car. I suspect it has had rear quarters put on at some point because they are all metal. The trunk lid could be centered a little better but generally a straight car. Even the interior lights work. All new electronic gauges and they all work. The car will sell. I am open no offers. What this means – Do not call me and ask me “what will you take?” If you like the car and would like to own it, simply say “ I would give you $XXXXX for it.
