Vehicle Detail
This is a great base for someone who is looking for a nice little project car to drive while you tinker and restore, or as an excellent parts source for another project. This car is a fully loaded luxury cruiser with great factory options all in good working order; the 455 V8 engine, 400 THM transmission and differential are the numbers matching original units. It runs and drives real well and while the body is rough, it still looks nice going down the road, but also has some great potential to be refurbished further which would only enhance the value of this classic piece of American Automobile History. This is a great driver and just needs a little TLC as it sits to make it a fun daily driver (on sunny days). I could totally see this car parked at someone's beach house or cottage as a 2nd car just to use to cruise into town with the top down as is. Now I should qualify that usually "driver" quality on eBay usually means piece of crap. Let's be clear this is a really solid car, but by no means a trailer queen either, hence a great car to drive, maybe cruise in it as you fix it up. The car collects lots of attention whether it's cruising down the street or parked. It also has some great parts for another project. Finish Grade = D+: Fire Coral Bronze paint job that has plenty of patina, but it actually looks pretty good from a few feet back and waxed up nice as seen in the pictures. To put it in perspective, this car has been sitting for about 10 years, with the last owner occasionally starting it up, taking it for a ride and then putting it back in the barn once or twice a year. However, shine/luster is pretty good and looks as good in person as it does in the pictures. Pretty decent driver quality and shows alright despite my "cruel spirited grade" and run down of the details. Body Grade = D+: Car looks to have all its original factory sheet metal. There is pretty good rust throughout the rear quarters as seen in the photos, the trunk has a few rust through spots as well. (see photos) Front sheet metal has rust issues on the lower quarters. Doors are clean and straight. Floorboards are solid. Car has spent its whole life in Northwest Michigan. Bright work Grade = B: All original stainless is present and is in good shape requiring only light buffing to restore. Door handles are original with some patina, but function well. Glass Grade = B+: All Glass is all original A01 Soft Ray Glass with correct date codes. Front windshield is free of chips or cracks with the antenna in the windshield. Rear window was originally a class unit but is missing. All weather-stripping and window "fuzzies" are in fair shape and in driver quality. Interior C-: Tan Interior at a glance looks pretty good. It is all original and loaded with options. It has a great deal of fading through out but overall is in very usable condition with some light restoration. The dash is free of any cracks or warping. The factory AM/FM Stereo is still in the dash, it turns on but I believe the speakers are dried out and there is no noise. It has the in dash clock (not working) A/C controls function as designed and get this..... the A/C still blows cold. The power seat works great, seats are faded with a couple of light tears only on the driver’s side. Power windows work intermittently; also it has the factory trunk release in the glove box that works great. Car has cruise control, which works well. Carpet is in fair shape as well. Convertible Top = D: The power top works great and the frame is in excellent shape, the top is in rough shape with several tears (see photos). Wheels Grade = B+: 15 inch steel wheels with Original Pontiac 472 custom finned wheel covers are complete and in great original condition with some pitting on the center caps Tires Grade = C+: Good tread with no signs of weather checking, Front tires are P225-75R15 Sears Super Guard Radial Tires, Rear Tires are P235-75R15 Dayton ThoroBred Radial tires. Suspension Grade = OK: Features factory Power steering with variable ratio. Looks to be all original equipment with factory front and rear stabilizer bars. Vehicle tracks straight, with a nice smooth ride. Exhaust Grade = C- : Single exhaust, Factory Cast Iron manifolds solid pipes, but there is a slight leak at the passenger side manifold. Still very quiet still. Rear-end Grade = OK: Factory 10 bolt rear-end with 3.08:1 rear axle ratio. Factory correct, original rear differential option. (Numbers matching) Unit is free of leaks, no noises or clunks, and operates as designed. Ignition Grade = OK: Stock factory points type distributor, starts and runs without missing. Air Conditioning/Heater Grade = B+: Original Air Conditioning option. AC compressor and all brackets in place and works well blowing cold air. All in dash components are present, vacuum diverters work as designed, fan is operational and heater blows warm. Transmission Grade = OK: Original numbers matching 400 THM automatic Transmission is free of any leaks. I don't know anything about the transmission internals but it shifts and functions well, fluid is clear and clean. Brakes Grade = OK: Factory equipped with Power Front Disc brakes. Brakes are in good working order. Engine Grade = B: Original 455 is in the car, block code YY (455 250 HP) with 4X cylinder heads. HD Cooling system, 7 blade Theromstatic clutch fan and HD radiator. Has the original points style ignition, original 4 bbl Quadrajet carb with functioning choke, and A/C is complete and in very good operating order and still blows cold. The motor is free of any noises or knocks, and there is no smoke upon start-up cold or warm. Starts easily when cold and idles smoothly through out the warm up process. Engine has that classic Chris Craft like idle Pontiacs have and pulls a steady 25 inches of vacuum at idle. Engine pulls well under acceleration, no black smoke, and carburetor responds well. All original and unmolested, all factory brackets present. Summary: This is a fun car to drive, sure the body is rough but still it looks cool as is. It is a very nice car to drive with smooth acceleration, and clean comfortable cabin starts easily cold. The car has the numbers matching Drivetrain which is a real plus with an original style 455 V-8 block. Ride is smooth, comfortable for a long drive as long as it’s not raining! Operation is very reliable and without issue and the engine pulls hard off idle up to 5000 rpm. It is a lot of fun to kick down at a roll as the car sets you back in the seat. The suspension feels like you are floating as it goes down the road. The car as is would make a great, reliable nice weather driver that would be a blast to drive on a nice day to work as a relic rod! If you had a beach house it would be great parked there as an extra car just to cruise in and maybe take guests into town for dinner or run to the grocery store. I would love to see the car fully restored but I realize the motor and many options make it a great parts donor based on the condition of the body. If you have a solid body car you could use this car to help you restore your solid body. In fact there are several Grand Ville's on Ebay right now with better bodies but begging for this car's drivetrain and options. As a musclecar fan myself I see the value of this car as a great donor to put a 455 in a GTO and has all the A/C parts often missing on many classic mucle cars. You could easily strip what you need from this car and then sell off the leftover parts and break even on your purcahse or possibly make a profit off the leftover parts. Most of the options will work on other Pontiacs as the parts are compatible with other models. I think you can drive this car literally anywhere right now as is, I took it for a 30 mile highway cruise with out issue Moday evening. This car is complete, unmolested, runs and drives great, is reliable, starts right up with functioning choke, so while the body is rough it still makes a nice base to build from but enjoy the day you buy it. Simply put, it's a great value as a cruiser or for parts! Questions.....call me at 231-935-3840 ask for Reggie. I have tried to describe the car as honestly and clearly as possible to give you a clear picture of what it is, and help you plan a budget if you were to buy it. That said……it’s an old car and is sold as is with no implied warranty.
