Vehicle Detail
A highly optioned 1981 Turbo Trans Am made into a SE black and gold recreation This car I bought back in 2003 as an original dark brown exterior and two tone dark brown/Sierra doeskin interior Turbo TA that just had new rod bearings put into the 301 Turbo engine. Previous owner got upset with shop after spots showed up on interior from water. Car was kept in garage by owner and was from California according to previous owner. Previous owner bilked insurance for interior damage and did not pay mechanic bill. I obtained vehicle through a mechanic’s lien. I later spoke with previous owner and he even gave me original Quadrajet from 301 Turbo engine that needed rebuilt. I spent the next several years deciding how I wanted this car redone and doing a lot of research. I finally settled on making a Black and Gold SE tribute with a naturally aspirated Pontiac drivetrain since at that time, original engine and 81 color interior parts were impossible to find and/or expensive. This car is a very high end #2 frame on restored vehicle that was, when starting restoration, in solid, well cared for original shape. This vehicle drives wonderfully and I have won numerous awards at Car shows throughout the Washingtont state. I am only selling because my financial priorities have to go in a different direction, otherwise, I would not sell this car. You will not be able to reproduce this vehicle for what I am asking for this car. Countless hours have gone into this vehicle utilizing friends who have professional vehicle expertise and my own labor efforts with a lot of excellent deals on parts made. Now with that said, I have spent in the neighborhood on parts alone and certain paid professional labor around 13,000 to 15,000 dollars to restore this vehicle. Anyone who knows the cost of restorations knows that this is cheap! It should be noted that this vehicle has been driven responsibly by a mature 50 year old male and garaged always when not being driven. I do not drive this vehicle in inclement weather either. Why you should consider owning this beautiful Bandit TA This car is done well and should give you many hours of driving pleasure as it has for me. If you wish to, you can take it to parades and car shows. I constantly get positive complements wherever I drive it. Please realize that I have spent countless hours on this restoration and have been picky (no redneck shade tree junk job) about how things were done short of a full frame off nut and bolt restore. I know it is not a true Special Edition Y82 car and I am not asking the price of one either. You will need to do little but turn the key, drive, put in more gas and change the oil regularly for many years. Maybe you can even attempt to take the car to the Bandit Run some year. I really want someone who appreciates these cars to buy this car and enjoy all the hard work I put into it. You won’t be disappointed. Listed below are the main highlights and in no way are exhaustive of what has been done to the vehicle. Any and all questions are welcome after you digest what has been written and answered already. First, I started with the drivetrain. The following is what is now in the car: Engine 1971 Pontiac 455 with #66 decked heads. Engine has under 2,000 miles since the following complete rebuild: All machine work of block and original nodular iron crank done by professional machine shop with rotating assembly balanced. All new high quality Clevite bearings. New 4340 I beam forged rods New Speed Pro power forged pistons with moly rings Billet cam using Comp cam specs 270H-10 Heads were decked and all new valves, valve stem seals with screw in ARP studs. Valves are Manley jetted melanite coated valves. All new valve springs and rocker arms. All new Fel Pro gaskets and all new accessories to include water pump, alternator, rebuilt carburetor, fuel pump, mini torque starter, Stainless fluid dampner, HEI distributor, motor mounts, etc. No shortcuts done. D-port aftermarket Ram Air exhaust manifolds with full 3 inch X piped dual exhaust with new Summit Race Pro Flow mufflers. Also new larger splitter tips all custom installed by a noted local muffler shop. Estimated horsepower is lower to mid 400 horse and lower 500 to mid foot pounds torque according to machinist who builds lots of race car engines. Receipts available. Transmission TH400 short shaft completely rebuilt using stage 2 shift kit and Corvette 1900 stall torque converter by Wilder’s Transmissions. Driveline shortened and all new u-joints installed. Receipts available Rear end 308 gear ratio Pumpkin removed and all completely inspected and cleaned with new lubricant and posi additive with new cover gasket. A brand new radiator and condenser was installed and I have A/C brackets and a compressor set aside for completing A/C system if one wishes. So much I can’t remember done and new. Drivetrain was completely rebuilt. Chassis (has currently 129,XXX original miles) Prior to installing drivetrain, I cleaned the underbody with several products and painstakenly painted using the high quality acid etching rust prohibiting Magnet Chassis Saver paint the entire underbody to include the frame. Both the trunk and engine compartments were cleaned and all needed parts were updated to include, spare tire, jack, trunk carpet, etc. In the engine compartment, firewall area was cleaned and painted to include inner fenders with evaporator box restored, heater fan replaced, etc. Reciepts available Interior First of all, the car had its interior removed with the exception of the plastic part of the dash and all was updated. Dash had all metal turned silver dash redone gold by professional. All gauges were resurfaced and repaired as needed by a Clock Doc. A full dash cover was installed properly by proper preparation techniques. Floor boards were cleaned and insulated material was put between them and new carpet. All seats were bead blasted and repainted with all new PUI seat covers. All interior plastics were either replaced with good condition used black parts or properly prepped and painted black from original tan interior parts. A digital Kenwood AM/FM cassette stereo with Pontiac moniker and four new speakers were installed in lieu of the factory radio (still have original). A 12 disc CD player remotely operated was installed in the trunk. Power antenna works as it should. All new door panels and rear shelf, inner roof headliner etc all redone. Interior looks awesome. Receipts available Tires and Snowflake wheels Snowflake rims were painstakenly stripped and sanded and polished removing aberrations to then be professionally repainted. A new set of 235x60x15 set of Les Schwab Grand Am radial tires were put on them. Brakes and suspension parts New brakes and poly urethane bushings and shocks had already been recently installed by previous owner on the front suspension and all-wheel disc brake system so I only replaced the backing plates after going through and cleaning up the brake parts. I did put on a new master cylinder and restored the vacuum booster while bleeding the system after installing new screw in bleeders. Also installed were the heavier front coil springs. A set of frame connectors were put on to tie the rear frame to the front for added strength from the extra horsepower and torque. Paint and exterior All body work was done using premier supplies and quality materials by a professional body person. Vehicle had few needed body aberrations for its age. Paint was also done with high quality materials using two part paint and clear coat multiple coat system all done by a professional body shop. I then took car after curing to have paint colored buffed to a mirror shine before installing professionally all new Phoenix Graphics decals. New rubber door moldings, trims, door hinge parts replaced as well as all power lock and windows gone through and/or replaced. I do still have a new trunk rubber to replace but original isn’t bad, and I have the door ding side moldings, however, I chose not to put on because I like it better without. Receipts available A few noted items needing attention As with any car, there are always some small items to attend to. I just haven’t gotten to these. 12 disc CD in trunk is new, however, after install and testing as working, I reinstalled the under dash vents and somehow must have knocked loose the power wire to it or something. Just need to trace down and fix. Second, you will need to pull out glove box to access heater cables to heater/AC box to adjust properly the throw of the vent hatch between heat and cool air. It does blow some heat from core while driving in summer so it is not fully sealing. Not hard, just haven’t found time to do. These two items are all I can think of that need attention. Finally, if you have read and digested all of this, then you know that this car has been carefully made to its current condition and if you are looking for a car like this as an enthusiast to enjoy for many years, this car will leave you with no disappointments. Any and all questions of anything not listed here or more details by prospective, serious buyers will be answered.
