Vehicle Detail

Up for bid is a 1969 Firebird 400, all numbers matching with 71k original miles. Car has all PHS docs with it as well as a copy of original window sticker. Factory AC California car built in Van Nuys equipped with power steering, power brakes, deluxe interior, new vinyl top, Rally ll wheels including spare all date coded as well. This has the hood tach (non working) as well as the RARE rear fold down seat! My dad bought this car a few years ago and was a literal “barn find” outside of Boise Idaho. He had every intention of doing a full original restoration but his health decline put a stop to that. He started from the top down by having a shop remove and install a new correct grain black vinyl top to replace the older dry rotted one. The car was power washed and in the process, in several small spots we were able to see the paint flake and expose a blue paint under it. The car was originally Champagne color. Blue was popular in the 70’s so they used to repaint them. Some time there after it was repainted over back to original. Around the rear tail lights was some minor bubbling around the edge of the lenses, so self conscious as he was of someone sitting behind him looking at the rear, he removed the lenses & sanded the panel down, primed & spot painted with original as he was planning on using as a daily driver & wanted that appearance to look good before a total strip down of the paint in the end. Pics will show before & after. You will notice the new paint is slightly darker because original is sun faded with this high & dry desert heat here. The car was a non runner so we drained all fluids, rebuilt the Carter AFB 4bbl carb, installed new radiator, starter, plugs & fired her up. Has a great sound to her with the dual glass packs underneath however once running and warmed up, starts to blow some smoke and some oil drips out of the right side rear pipe. He had new valve stem seals installed but the mechanic said either a seal popped back up that didn’t seat or re-ring the engine or do a full rebuild. Unsure, he was going to leave the engine for last. The correct engine is the YT code with a 7 digit number of 0324094 to the left front of the water pump on the block. It is a factory AC car, all complete and original but the compressor was unhooked to get the valve cover off to do the seals and wasn’t recharged as pending rings or rebuild decision. The underneath is super solid frame, no rust through or rot on it. The gas tank has a dent in it from backing into something it looks. The hood, trunk lid, front fenders, doors & rear quarters in excellent, straight on smooth with no visible signs of prior body work/filler done however the drivers side rear quarter behind the tire has some minor rust coming through. The back lower valance on the drivers side also has a small repairable dent, near where the gas tank had the dent. The wheel well trim doesn’t have even a nick in it and the bumpers have the usual light pitting from being 43 years old but straight & ding less. The trunk pan has less than 8-10 holes in it varying from match head to a half inch by 2 inches or so. It appears when he got it, there was a bedding comforter in the trunk that was still moist and more than likely absorbed water in through the decklid seals. He was told not to replace it because it will hold more value with as much original sheet metal as possible & instead, to buy a pan, trace out the small sections & weld them in place, grind the weld & sand. The windshield has a 3"-4" crack from a star below eye view on drivers side. The seats will need to be recovered with the foam that’s dry. This also has the rare desired fold down rear seat, the top of it dry rotted out and will need new covers along with the front buckets. Rear base seat is fine along with the rear lower arm rest panels. The dash pad has 4-5 cracks. Headliner above in excellent condition. No rips in carpet but could use new, shows age. Side glass all appear original. Both deluxe door panels excellent, no cracks, the carpets below them show some wear. Have both new door locks to be put on. New factory ignition key installed along with trunk key. Had I had the space & time, I would really love to restore this back to its rich luster but I prefer to sell it to someone who would take the time to restore back to pristine condition and not into some modified hack. There are many projects that are puzzles in a box out there, not many numbers matching original survivors, so the reserve is priced accordingly on this. No rush to get rid of it so if you are the high bidder, it can stay as long as you need till it is picked up or shipped.
