Vehicle Detail
For Sale is a 1968 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible. I purchased the car in the early 1990's while living in Florida, and while it was fun to drive, it was not too pretty to look at. Beginning in July of 1993 and ending in April of 1994, the car was treated to a complete, pan off professional restoration. Every bit of rot was removed and repaired, and every moving part, nut and bolt, and trim was refinished or replaced. The car was used as a daily driver for a year, and then used sparingly as a weekend toy. The 13,500 miles shown on the odometer are the actual miles since the restoration. The car moved along with us to Accident, Maryland in 2009. The engine seized in the first attempt to drive the car the 1,100 miles to it's new home. So, in July of 2009, after being towed to Maryland, a brand new, VW of Mexico manufactured 1600cc longblock was purchased from JBugs, and the engine was rebuilt. It has a Weber progressive two barrel carb, a new SVDA distributor, and a mere 1,000 miles on the engine. It runs great. As with any 20 year old restoration, the car is not concourse perfect. From five feet away, the British Racing Green paint is stunning with a shine only a hand wet-sanded finish can provide. On closer inspection, you can find a few spots that have started to bubble, mostly around the fuel filler. There is NO rust of any kind. The car was undercoated when it was restored, and even the underside looks good. The interior is nearly perfect. The seats were purchased from Sewfine, along with the matching materials for the door panels. The top is also nearly perfect, with a very clear rear window. The radio is just something from Walmart, but the dash was not cut in any way to install it. It's configured to work with an iPod shuffle, and that is included. There is no air conditioning, power steering, or navigation, but it does have the cool fan shown in the pictures for when you're stopped in traffic. It also has seat belts for the front passengers. Real people don't fit in the back seat anyway. It does leak a very small amount of fluid from the transaxle and from the right rear axle seal, but it's done that for a long time. At 50-55 mile per hour, there is a little shimmy from the front end. The tires are not the culprit since all four were replaced in 2010. The tires are the proper 165SR15 radials. The spare is a 135SR15 so that it fits better in the front. The car passed a Maryland state inspection when it was brought into the state in 2009 with the exception of one ball joint. That has been replaced. The car is located near Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland and can be inspected by appointment. The car will be sold as-is, where-is. I have a tow bar that has been modified for a Karmann Ghia (the tongue is too short on a bug tow bar) and will consider delivering the car in a 100 mile radius for a nominal charge (fuel and tolls). The tow bar and quite a few Karmann Ghia parts are included with the sale of the car. You can take them all, or just what you want. Feel free to contact me at reasonable hours (9am to 9pm ET) at 301-387-5948 with any questions. A $500 non-refundable deposit is due within 48 hours of the end of the auction. Cash or Cashier's Check for the balance on pickup.
