Vehicle Detail
The CB400F Super Sport (directly from Wikipedia) The Honda CB400F was an inline-four engine standard motorcycle made by Honda from 1975 through 1977. After introducing the four-cylinder CB750 motorcycle in 1969, Honda followed with a string of lighter fours featuring engines as small as 350 cc (CB350 Four, CB500 Four), and the CB400F 408 cc Four, produced in 2 models. For the most part, the CB400F was simply an upgraded version of the 350 model from the previous year.[1] the most striking change was the swoopy four-into-one exhaust system that snaked around the frame, converging into a single muffler on the right side of the bike. Also noticeable were the angular fuel tank and flat cafe-style handlebars, all of which gave the bike a more racer-like look and feel than the rather pedestrian 350. Although aimed at the sporting segment of the market, the four-stroke CB400F did not have the acceleration of the competition's two-strokes, particularly the triples from Kawasaki.[2] But what the CB400F engine lacked in power it made up for in refinement, the small-displacement four-stroke being smoother, quieter and much more economical than the two-strokes. To help keep the engine in its power band, Honda employed a six-speed transmission—something of a rarity at the time. The CB400F was a very successful motorcycle in club or privateer racing. Kaz Yoshima and other racers were able to take Honda's little 408 cc engine up to 490 cc and with the addition of other racer options, this small bore was considered a 'giant killer'. Confusion often arises over the two models that were produced. Earlier 'F' models had a plain red or blue tank and side-panels running to frame number 1073399. The tanks only bore the words HONDA Super Sport, and the side-panel logo used a font wherein each character was represented by three parallel lines depicting 400FOUR. Up to frame number 1056883 'F' models had swing-arm mounted pillion footrests, but from then on the 'F' models had the pillion footrests moved to frame-mounted brackets; it is often assumed that this feature only started with the F2 model but this is not the case.[citation needed] The F2 model commenced with frame number 1073400 and featured a new paint scheme: 'candy Antares red' or 'parakeet yellow'. The new paintwork featured stripes on the tank and had a different, angular, font for the '400FOUR' label on the side panels. The F1 model was not shipped to the United Kingdom or Europe [citation needed]. It featured typically a plain yellow tank and black side-panels with the F-type early logo.[3] today it is not uncommon to see examples restored with F2-type paintwork but F-type logos on the side panels, or F-type early frames with F2-type paintwork. About my bike: I have owned the bike for 2 years and have put very few miles on it since I have owned it (roughly 700). The bike has had 2 previous owners and is originally purchased in Iowa from the information I was able to track down. I am selling the bike because I am interested in turning a larger CB into a “café” style bike and this bike is too rare and too nice in its original condition to do this. So reluctantly I am selling it. Frame VIN : CB400F-1029586 Engine VIN : CB400F-1029827 The title is a free and clear Oregon title in my name and possession The good: The bike just had its post winterized maintenance by myself (competent enough mechanically due to my background in working on specialized heavy machinery). I have adjusted the valves, the points, timing, oil and filter change, adjusted braked and cables, etc. Mechanically the bike functions great and the motor is strong The transmission shifts as it should through all 6 gears The paint is beautiful and in great shape (previous owner had it stripped down and repainted the original red color as well as the side covers) The pipes and exhaust are original (very rare) they are in good condition. The left pipe has some minor surface rust and there is a small dent in the right pipe. (See pictures) The charging system works great and all electrical switches work as they should. To ensure this I have purchased a new rectifier and adjustable regulator from Oregon Motorcycle Parts. If you know these guys then you know they make great products. I have adjusted the regulator perfectly with my Fluke meter. The tires and tubes are almost new and in great condition The seat is original and in great condition with no cracks and very little wear The not-so-good The left fork seal is leaking. I have included the genuine Honda seals in the auction The side stand is in bad shape. It looks as if the previous owner attempted to weld it back but did a crappy job. I was going to get this addressed but did not have the time. I use the center stand anyway. The front fender has a small dent (see pictures) The tank has a small chip in the front where the triple tree is at (see pictures) The left side cover has a small chip (see pictures) The bike is running on POD filters due to the original air box was in bad shape. The rubber was not creating a good seal on the carbs and causing low RPM sluggish. It looks as if the previous owner tried to repair this but didn’t do a good job as finding replacement boxes in good shape is a rare find. The push button starter pops out of the carrier sometimes and hangs down. This should be addressed. I believe I have described the bike to the best of my ability and if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch.
