Vehicle Detail
Summary 1999 VW Passat Sport Wagon GLS, 1.8T (1.8L turbo engine), 148,325 miles, located in Ithaca, NY. Dark blue exterior, black leather interior, heated seats; synthetic oil changes (the good stuff) every 5-6,000 miles since new; manual 5 speed; I am the second owner. Runs great, in good condition. Key features in good working order Leather seating Leather shift knob trim Leather steering wheel trim Alloy wheels Metallic paint Heated front seats Air conditioning Non-smoking vehicle its entire life Purchase history and reason for sale My wife and I bought this car in 2002 when it had 60,000 miles. We are selling it because we are purchasing a newer car. Accident-free history I've never had an accident in this vehicle, although I believe the previous owner had a parking-lot fender-bender and had the driver's door repaired and painted. I've never noticed anything unusual about the appearance or function of the door. The good The car is mechanically in very good condition. The engine runs smoothly, the manual transmission shifts cleanly, and the clutch has lots of gripping ability. The car has four matching tires, the front ones about two years old, the rear ones about three years old. The car has been driven regularly about 10,000 miles per year in the last four years. The interior is clean. The black leather seats have no rips or tears, but there is some typical wear on the driver's left-side seat bolster. The engine delivers excellent power, not noticeably different from ten years ago. Steering and suspension components are very tight, giving a supple, refined ride with lots of composure. The heat and air conditioning work fine. Interior control switches and gauge cluster lights all work fine. The car has been maintained by Autoworks in Ithaca for about the past eight years. Repair records available. Exterior There are small indentations on roof from where a small tree branch fell. The roof rack is missing some cosmetic trim pieces but is secure. The paint has scratches, scuffs, and nicks typical of a 1999 car. On the exterior paint there are several splotches of sunscreen that I haven’t been able to remove with regular soap and water. Minor Issues Sometimes when the vehicle has been sitting moisture accumulates on the inside of the windshield. The power moonroof doesn’t always open when switched open. The radio antenna is missing. The wire connecting the rear-mounted antenna to the radio is broken and needs to be replaced. I heard on an Internet forum that this issue would cost about $300-350 to fix. The radio picks up only strong local FM stations. The power lock system sometimes doesn't lock the rear, driver-side door. The easiest remedy is to unlock and lock the car again using the remote key and it always locks the second time. Weird, but easy to work around. The front cigarette lighter/AC power source doesn't work. It failed when a soft drink was spilled on it. There are two AC power sources in the wayback if you want to connect a device such as a GPS or MP3 player. If you want to connect a device using the front cigarette lighter/AC power source, you will need to have it repaired. The rear 6-CD changer and in-dash tape player don't work. The interior convenience lights (i.e., the cabin lights between the sun visors and above the rear passenger doors) almost always do not work. Occasionally they come on, so it’s not a bulb or a fuse issue. There are no mysterious electrical gremlins. All of the above issues are specific issues the car has had consistently for two or three years, but they never bothered me enough to repair them. You could fix them if they bother you. The carpet on the back of the rear seat is peeling away, needs to be re-glued. These are all of the known issues. Bid with confidence knowing I have described every issue in detail and with honesty. Recent repairs and maintenance January 2013: Restored headlights, replaced rear wiper motor and arm, cleaned sunroof drains and plenum panel, replaced front stabilizer links. $620. August 2012: Passed New York State Inspection. Synthetic oil change Mobil 1 5W-30. May 2012: Repaired exhaust sleeve under warranty. No charge. Rotate winter to summer tires. Cleaned leaves and twigs from drain holes, wet-vacuumed damp rear carpet. March 2012: Entire vehicle inspected prior to travel. Vehicle found to be in good condition. Front and rear brake service performed to clean calipers, $214. October 2011: Removed plastic lower engine cover due to damage. Rotate summer to winter tires. August 2011: Synthetic oil change Mobil 1 5W-30. July 2011: Installed new flex pipe and front muffler. Passed New York State Inspection, $892. May 2011: Installed rear muffler, $334. April 2011: Replace constant velocity axle shaft, $416. Complete rear brake job, pads, rotors, calipers, $510. Front brake job, pads and rotors, $307. October 2010: Replaced split flange on muffler, $145. September 2010: Replaced cuppler connecting muffler to header, $113. Above is two years’ worth of repair and maintenance history. Also, note that the upper and lower control arms, all eight of them, were replaced in March of 2010, about $1700. The timing belt and water pump were replaced at 96,000 miles, and I believe the replacement interval is 100,000 miles. So that’s it. I’m listing this car for a low starting bid and no reserve. This is a good car, so good luck bidding.
