Vehicle Detail

This auction features a great car as is and would be a cool ride for someone to drive and enjoy, while restoring over a period of time. This car is sort of a "twice found" barn find, found once in the early 2000’s, then set to rest again 6 years ago until it resurfaced recently. That great thing about this car is you have barn find looks but completely restored mechanicals, which is the latest trend in the musclecar hobby. It runs great and looks really tough as is, but also has some great potential to be refurbished further only enhancing the value of this classic piece of American Muscle. As you read through the write up you will see the car is in very good mechanical and structural condition with most major items having been already rebuilt or replaced. This is a great driver and ready to go as it sits and have some fun terrorizing the streets and the tuners in your town. Now I should qualify that usually "driver" quality on eBay usually means piece of crap. Let's be clear this is a really good car, but by no means a trailer queen either, hence a great car to drive, and will show just fine at most local car shows and cruise ins. The black on black combination, and Super Sport option on this car collects lots of attention whether it's cruising down the street or parked. The combo of big block motor and horseshoe shifted automatic make this a fun car to drive and cruise, and maybe stop light race a little! Finish -- Grade D/C-: The black paint is 20-15 year old acrylic enamel paint job. There was a problem with the prep and in some areas there are some small bubbles where the paint is not adhering. Not rust, my guess is they did not finish prep the car thoroughly, and seal the finish work well. The front fenders have some checking/cracking as well. There are some minor scratches chips through out the car; however despite this the shine/luster is very good and looks as good in person as it does in the pictures. There is some rust bubbling on the passenger and driver’s fenders at the bottom rear. It was fixed and could easily be patched. Paint looks good at 10 foot. Very good driver quality and shows pretty well. It has more of a patina feel to it then poor quality paint job. To me its paint has more character, like well worn crow’s feet on warrior’s sun tanned face, then flawed paint. It gives it a sleeper effect! Body -- Grade B : Car is all original factory sheet metal and was originally rust protected, body plugs through out. The biggest concerns are the lower front fender quarters mentioned previously (and in photos) and the driver’s rear quarter. It is solid but when I run a credit card type magnet on it loses adhesion above the wheel well opening (starting about 3 inches up). The lip feels solid inside, so I’m unsure if it was a small dent that was repaired, or light rust repair. Lower quarter is solid with no signs of heavy repair. Passenger quarter is solid through out. Other sheet metal is clean and appears free of repair and rust. Doors are clean with some minor rust on the bottoms. Floor boards are clean and free of rust, with the exception of the driver's floor board that looks like some minor fiberglass patch on it. The trunk floor is solid as seen in the photos, and appears original. Trim Code info: ST 69 13637 ATL284610 BDY TR 756 10 10 PNT 08A It breaks down as follows: 71 = 1969 13637 = Malibu Sport Coupe ATL = Atlanta 284610 = seq. # TR 756 = Black Coated Fabric Bucket Seats 10 10 = upper & lower body color Tuxedo Black 08A = build date August 1st week VIN Reads 136379A349077 1 = Chevrolet 36 = Malibu or Concours V8 engine 37 = 2 door sport coupe 9 = 1969 model year A = Atlanta GA 3 = Chevelle 49077 = sequential number for Atlanta Georgia Frame -- Grade A: Is straight and free of any rust or scale, no signs of any metal repair Bumpers - Grade C-: Front Chrome Bumper is straight and free of damage however the chrome is starting to pit and patina. Rear is original, straight and free of dents but some light patina has started as well. Very straight, no signs of damage great cores. Bright work -- Grade B: All original stainless is present and is in great shape requiring only light buffing to restore. Door handles are pitted and will need replacing, but function well. Glass Grade B+: Glass aside from the windshield, is all original A01 Soft Ray Glass with correct date codes. Front and rear windshields are free of chips or cracks. Front windshield has been replaced with an aftermarket replacement. Rear window and side windows are also free of chips, but have a few light scratches. All weather-stripping are in fair shape and will need replacement soon but seal ok currently. Window “fuzzies” are in very good shape, unsure if they have been replaced Interior C+/B-: Interior is nearly all original and looks good. New items include: carpet, deluxe sport steering wheel option and horseshoe shifter console. Vinyl seats are all original and in good condition. Driver’s seat has a 2 inch hole in the lower outside corner typical in and out wear. Door panels are in good shape and driver quality, with some light warping. All armrest are present and complete. Window cranks are all present and in very good condition. Dash pad looks good but has some cracking on the flat surface above the gauge cluster. Dash features "idiot lights”. Lenses on gauge pods are clear and clean with some light scratching that should polish out, fuel gauge works. All dash trim is original plastic bezel is cracked and radio is cut out. I replaced the headlight switch and the cigarette lighter is intact but untested. Car has Summit gauge cluster, mechanical oil pressure gauge works, volt meter works, temperature gauges is inop. Radio is Clarion DB245 CD/AM/FM player that powers a Visonek Model V520SX speakers set up in rear. (In the car when I bought it.) Radio has excellent sound quality, good installation. All weather-striping is original and seals but will need replacing soon with new window "fuzzies" installed. Wheels Grade A: Original Chevrolet Super Sport 14 X 7 Rally steel rims powder coated in original factory colors with factory SS center caps original style lug nuts, and new trim rings. Tires Grade A: Brand New BF Goodrich Radial T/A white letter tires. Car features P225/70R14 size tire in the rear and P215/70R14 size tire in the front. Suspension Grade OK: Steering components are all in good shape and tight. Vehicle tracks straight, with a firm but comfortable ride. Rear features air shocks that still hold air and appear fairly new (5-6 years old????) Exhaust Grade B+ : Dual exhaust, Factory Cast Iron manifolds, solid 2.5 inch pipes (not mandrel bent), but good installation into Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers with full tailpipes exiting out the rear. Rear-end Grade OK: Factory 12 bolt rear-end 3.23:1 open rear axle ratio. Factory correct, original rear differential option.) Unit is free of leaks, no noises or clunks, and function operates as designed. Comes with chrome differential cover. Ignition Grade OK: Newer Style HEI style distributor. New cap and rotor, vacuum control and centrifugal advance weights and springs. Spark plug wires are new with fresh AC spark plugs. Air Conditioning/Heater Grade D-: Non-A/C car. All in dash components are present, cables are free and move easily, and fan is non-operational and heater emits warmth, no leaks from core. Transmission Grade OK: I think this car may have been a manual car as the there is a hole in the firewall for the clutch rod. However, the brake pedal is a true factory automatic pedal set up, and the conversion is clean and professional, and tough to tell is not factory with the correct console shifter and wiring. Era correct 400 THM automatic transmission and correct cross member. Unable to determine exact year of the transmission. Transmission is free of any leaks. I don’t know anything about the transmission internals but it appears to have been rebuilt recently. It has an aftermarket vacuum modulator, and the torque converter appears to have been replaced with an aftermarket street performance converter (B & M???). Trans fluid is clean, and free of any burned smell. Shifts crisp but not too harsh. Brakes Grade OK: Factory equipped with Power Front Disc brakes. Brakes were inspected and in good condition. Rear brakes are drumming style good pads, the master cylinder has been upgraded with a Corvette style master cylinder. Brakes perform to factory specifications. Engine Grade A: Era correct 396 V8 professionally rebuilt in 07/2006 at A & A Machine & Recker Repair Svc in Davison Michigan . Installation is clean and professional and stock in appearance. Engine is equipped with brand new chrome valve covers, chrome factory style open element air cleaner, stock Holley carb style cast iron intake, with 750 Holley Double pumper carb, no choke. Upgrades include, Comp Cams 11-318-4 Cam, (Duration @ .050 is 236 exh/int, with .556 gross valve lift (exh & int), bored .060 over. New valves installed with performance valve job, light mill on heads and block was decked, compression is 10:1, runs fine on pump gas. Engine was professionally rebuilt when owned by a previous owner and receipt is included, however no warranty implied. The motor is clean inside (valve covers removed for inspection) and is free of any noises or knocks, and there is no smoke upon start-up cold or warm, and is free of any oil or coolant leaks, supporting the claim of a recent/fresh rebuild. The engine has a slight lopey idle but pulls 25 inches of vacuum, the carburetor has appears to be dialed into to the engine modification combination and pulls smooth right off idle without hesitation through acceleration. Engine features new, hoses, and new fuel pump plus fresh tune-up with cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. Brackets are all factory and period correct and installation is professional. Oil pressure holds a steady 60 lbs of pressure when warm, and engine stays consistent at 170-180 degrees. My desk top dyno estimates this combination puts out 410 HP @ 5500 RPM and 420 FT LBS. of TQ @ 4500 RPM Summary: This car is “10 footer” that looks great driving down the road, and frankly, even up close, it is very presentable for most local car shows or cruises despite the patina on the paint job. It is a very nice car to drive with smooth acceleration, and clean comfortable cabin. The performance idle through the turbo mufflers makes it a hit at the cruise in or at the stop light. The car has the period correct drivetrain is a real plus. Ride is firm, but comfortable for a long drive. Operation is very reliable and without issue and the engine pulls hard off idle up to 5500 rpm. It is a lot of fun to kick down at a roll as the car sets you back in the seat. The suspension launches straight with some wheel hop when you mat it (consider installing a rear sway bar to fix this!) and spins the tires without brake torquing. The car as is would make a great reliable, daily driver that would be a blast to drive everyday to work. It is really a fun car to drive with its throaty exhaust and excellent power. This car offers a lot of potential with some paint and body work that will only improve the value of this car. The paint is very presentable as is but it should be noted a full repaint would really finish this restoration off nice, however the car draws quite a crowd as is and easily could be driven without shame. It's a perfect car for someone who has painting skills, but if you had to wait a year to save up for paint there is no shame in driving as is, it looks great, the patina gives it a real weathered street warrior feel! If you are a paint guy you could easily drive and enjoy this car now and then come next winter repaint it yourself and be ready for the next season or turn it over and make some money. Not a paint guy......no problem still a great car to buy and tinker with. All the tough things are done.....and it a great base to build on as a hobby car. You can drive a real street legend at a great value that will only increase in value. I real investment if managed correctly. Other then that, this car needs nothing else replaced and is road ready for cruising. Mechanically it has been totally gone through and all maintenance items checked (battery, alternator, brakes, radiator, etc) are in solid mechanical shape or replaced! You can drive this car literally anywhere without issue. So if doing a full restoration or building a bad news street terror is outside your skills level but your looking a for a great musclecar this the car for you. When you consider the full restoration numbers matching cars run $40K plus and most of the cars below $14K, well….. let’s just say are in need of a lot of work, and will cost $6-7000 to bring to this level, making this car a real value.
