Vehicle Detail

Look around. Just how many 454 El Caminos can you find that still have there original, born with engines and transmissions; either LS5 or LS6? This one does! How many can you find that are UNRESTORED? This one is, with only 1 repaint 30 years ago! And how many in this condition can you find that will win shows against restored ones? This one will! NOW FOR HISTORY ON THIS UNIQUE VEHICLE: This El Camino was purchased by my retired stepfather in the mid 70's. It was his daily driver until he passed away unexpectedly in 1985. He was a Corvette collector and was very meticulous with all of his vehicles. Other than a minor fender bender around 1983, this El Camino has never been wrecked or had any damage and of course has had no rust issues. It was repaired with all GM parts and stripped and repainted all over in OEM Lacquer at the time of the fender bender. That paint shop is still in business today! Except for a couple of very minor chips and a small amount of lacquer checking in one area that can only be seen under a certain light, the paint looks fantastic. Most would swear it was the original paint. It does NOT have the 'plastic' look of the newer basecoat/clearcoat paint jobs. You would swear it was painted within the past couple of years! After my stepfather passed away my mom drove it sparingly for about a year. Then she asked me to 'clean it up' for her. During this period I had restored 4 GTO's into GTOAA National Award Winners. So I took the El Camino into my shop, pulled the front clip, engine, tranny, and detailed the engine compartment and the undercarriage. This was 1986. At this point she stopped driving it; only showing it occasionally for a few years. All this time it was stored in her heated garage. Over the next 25 years my brother and I would make sure it was cranked and driven occasionally just to keep everything working properly. Probably less than 100 miles were put on it in these 25 years. In December of 2010 I was able to obtain it from my mom. The pictures you see are after it was simply cleaned underneath (mostly cobwebs), all the belts, hoses, fluids, etc. changed. I did have to touch up the paint on the engine block in a couple of places. And I took off the 30 year old Goodyear Eagles and Corvette Rallys and replaced them with the correct wheels and a new set of Firestone F60-15 bias ply Wide Ovals. I don't want to sell it, but health and financial situations force the sale. NOW FOR THE GOOD STUFF: The Build Sheet shows it was sold new at Fred Jones Chevrolet in Dahlonega, GA (out of business). Been in this area all it's life. Matching #, born with LS5 454 engine and Turbo 400 transmission 3.31 posi rear ORIGINAL vinyl top-in EXCELLENT condition ALL ORIGINAL interior except door panels (replaced in 1986 due to warping), EXCELLENT condition Speedo shows 25,xxx miles--I have no reason to suspect this is not correct One repaint 30 years ago in OEM Lacquer in EXCELLENT condition!
