Vehicle Detail

1982 Mercedes-Benz 240TD station wagon (W123 chassis). Originally purchased in Belgium, this car was brought to the US by its original owners as a legally imported grey market vehicle - European VIN #WDB12318310020323 - (2 digits short for Ebay to recognize as a US vehicle - this is a 1982 vehicle, not 1980). This three-owner vehicle has been lovingly maintained since new, and comes with all service records. Every oil change, every repair, everything. The car underwent a cosmetic update in 2011 from Mercedes Motoring of Glendale, CA. The car has an excellent repaint in the original taiga beige color. European 240TD model, similar to the US specification 300TD, but fitted with the original Euro bumpers, cloth and vinyl seats, chrome roof rack, luggage divider, and the durable, torquey, and fuel efficient OM616 2.4 liter diesel engine. This car is equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission (sorry, no 5-speed available on the 240), and performance is surprisingly spirited. Manual windows, manual sunroof, manual antenna. The car features a modern radio with MP3 player, and air conditioning, which was rebuilt in 2012. The transmission was also rebuilt in 2012, and the car shifts smoothly. The car starts smoothly, burns clean, and does not leak oil. The OM616 engine is in ideal candidate for a veggie / biodiesel conversion, but the car currently runs on diesel. Buyers in Southern California are encouraged to come and test drive the car. The car has a full book of service records, so the history is known. It was purchased in Belgium in 1982 by an American family living overseas. The family returned to the US and brought the car with them. Over the years, they moved from New York, to Florida, and then to San Diego. They sold the car in 2009 to a collector in Ohio, who I believe did the repaint in original taiga beige (this is the one receipt I do not have). The collector passed away, which is Mercedes Motoring found the car (and how I became the owner). Mercedes Motoring did a light interior update, but the car is in well maintained original condition. There are just under $30,000 in service receipts going back all the way to 1982. The engine is super strong, has no oil leaks, and runs beautifully. This car is not converted to grease, so this is a far cleaner engine than one usually finds on a W123. Transmission was rebuilt this year by Adsit, and it shifts smoothly. Tires are in very good shape and have plenty of tread. Suspension is at 40%, so I'd suggest you budget for new shock absorbers over the next year or two - old fashioned springs on this model. I drive the car around the potholed streets of Los Angeles, so it could probably use an alignment. Weatherstripping is original - functional, but faded. There is a ding on the trunk door, and a small tear in the left front bumper. Both are visible in the posted photos. Central door locking system works but is slow - my mechanic says there is likely an air bubble inside the system, which is not easy to clear. All wipers, washer fluid, buttons, dials, and gauges work. A/C system was rebuilt this year by G&N Mercedes in LA, so it nice and cold.
