The AMX was also classified as a muscle car, but "unique among other American cars at the time due its short wheelbase". The AMX was also the only American-built steel-bodied two-seater of its time, with the 1955-1957 Ford Thunderbird being the last ones. To a degree, the AMX was a competitor with America's only other two-seater of the era, the Chevrolet Corvette for substantially less money. With a one-inch (2.5 cm) shorter wheelbase than the Chevrolet's 2-seater, "the AMX was often seen by the press as a Corvette competitor." Fitted with the optional high-compression medium block 390 cu in (6.4 L) AMC V8, the AMX offered top-notch performance at an affordable price. In spite of this value and enthusiastic initial reception by automotive media and enthusiasts, sales never thrived. However, the automaker's larger objectives to refocus AMC's image on performance and to bring younger customers into its dealer showrooms was achieved. After three model years, the two-seat version was discontinued, and the AMX's now signature badging was transferred to a high-performance version of its 4-seat sibling, the Javelin, from 1971-1974This fine example of a 68 version is of the (X) code 390 variety. It is painted in it's correct Turbo Silver and sporting the factory red interior. The unique lines of the AMX give it a look that when she rides by, you can't help but take a look. It's look can not be mistaken for your everyday Mustang or Camaro. Add in the very rare side pipes and you have a car that will not be duplicated at your local car show or cruise in. The 390 is freshly built with no more than 1000 miles on her since completion. Mild upgrades were made to the ignition and fuel system adding a new MSD Distributor and Holley Carb while cosmetically upgrading under the hood during the rebuild. The car is highly optioned with the "Go Package",which consisted of Power Front Disc Brakes, Twin Grip Rear Axle and Racing Stripes. Other options that were included in this car were Power Steering, tilt wheel, Automatic floor shifted Transmission, and Air Conditioning. The A/C was a very rare option. The car does need a compresser, mounts and bracketry, condenser, drier and various hoses to complete. This can be installed in our award winning restoration shop if you so choose.The owner has spent a lot of time and money doing various repairs and upgrades. He also did a great job of fully documenting all the work and the documentation goes with the car.This is a very nice driver quality, rust free car that can be enjoyed for years to come.
