Vehicle Detail
Auction for used 1988 VW Cabriolet. Body is red, top is white, interior is white and black. Need to sell due to a job relocation outside the country. I've owned the car myself since 2002, so I have more than 10 years history with it. Here's a bit about it: Mileage - I bought it with around 112,000 miles on it, and now it has only 124,000. So the last 10 years have been very low mileage use. Only summer, nice days. Storage - The car has been stored inside garage 24/7. Not driven ever in winter or salt. Has never been exposed to rain, snow, hail, at least as far as I can say since buying 10 years ago Body condition - Overall this is very nice and rust free. Original paint, I've kept small chips touched up with factory color paint. Only real issue is a small door ding on rear passenger hear trunk, and some on drivers door. I've meant to get them re-done but never got around to it. Plus they are not very noticeable except close scrutiny. Engine - I've done all required maintenance here, mainly oil changes. But I've also put in new radiator to replace original which was leaking, as well as tune-up and all new belt/hoses over course of ownership. Runs very well. Clutch also seems good, lot of motion left in it. Shifts very smooth. Idles well, has never stalled or stopped, just takes a couple pumps on accelerator to get started and then good to go. Tires/Brakes - All good. Like I said above I've put on very little mileage. Top - Had brand new top installed about 3 years ago. Still looks brand new. All the rubber seals around the top and windows are original but very good shape. Interior - Also re-did interior upholstery around same time as top. Seat covers were ordered out all new from a VW customizing shop in Riverside, CA. Other new elements - Radio is upgraded with a Blaupunkt CD received. Have original VW unit with tape deck if you want it. Also replaced the glove box lid with new one, since old one was bubbling on surface. Looks new now. I also got new body clips to secure all the body trim pieces, as well as new chrome piping around the windshield. Just wanted it to look new. Lastly, I found and painted the original factory front license holder. This is pretty hard to find, and I admit cost almost $100 itself. In full disclosure, there are also few things that do not fully work, as follows:Car is upgraded model with air conditioning and cruise control, but neither have ever worked. Nor have I had them fixed since I really don't need AC when I drive top down, and cruise is really unnecesary with a stick shift.AC/heater fan only works on low and high settings. Does not appear to work on middle setting. Again, never bothered to fix since rest of settings work. And heater and defrosters work fine if you are driving on a colder day.The low oil pressure light can sometimes come on, especially when driving a long time on a very hot day,and only at an idle stop. But still the oil pressure gauge reads at full pressure. I've even tested the engine oil pressure with a manual gauge and it is 100% OK. If you do research you will see this is a common issue with these particular oil pressure sending units in the Cabriolets, and 99% of the time is an issue with the sender not the actual oil pressure. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to answer quickly. On Jan-04-13 at 10:51:53 PST, seller added the following information: IMPORTANT NOTE - It was brought to my attention that the listing about references both 5-speed manual and automatic transmission. That was an error. THE CAR IS A 5-SPEED MANUAL. The reference to automatic transmission was in error. I am very sorry for any confusion on that. This is also shown in the interior photos showing the stick-shift.
