Vehicle Detail

1978 Pontiac Trans Am Macho T/A #126 Special Order Silver Anniversary Edition 1 of 4 built DKM -Mecham Racing documentation included Original 70,947 Miles 3 owner car - needs restoration Runs Good ** RARE ** Out of 204 Macho T/A's in 1978, there were 4 Special Editions ordered called "Silver Anniversary". All 4 were ordered by 1 Pontiac Dealership in Utah and were Silver cars with Black stripes and decals. All had Black Deluxe interiors and the large bird on the hood. They also had "Silver Anniversary" painted on both sail panels and documents show each was ordered this way. This Macho retains it's original paint, interior, drivetrain, wheels, etc. The car was stored since 1987 when it was sold to a gentleman who planned to repaint due to fading. He never got to it and when I purchased the car 5 years ago, it had a big dent on the trunk top and broken T-Top. The floor in front has some rust through and some behind rear wheels on lower quarter panel. One smaller rust spot behind front driver side wheel on lower fender. She's all original and after we flushed fluids, she runs great but needs paint, some interior and a good detailing under the hood. I have the new carpet , headliner and a better trunk lid with spoiler that will go with the car. Nothing hidden here, it's original and shows everything as it is. Good solid frame and undercarriage. She was never an abused or hacked up car. 70,947 original, adult owned miles. Engine runs great, no rattles or smoking. Trans shifts fine, brakes spongy, A/C is all there. one dash crack. Gauges work. Seats in good shape just a little dirty. Needs driver side T-Top. W72 Original 400 engine -Z code Automatic Transmission WS6 Suspension Handling Package 8 1/2" Snowflake wheels Factory Undercoating DKM Macho T/A options: For the 1978 Model year DKM used the Pontiac 400, but modified the carbueration, ignition, and added Hooker Headers with dual catalytic converters and no mufflers for a net increase of about 50hp The suspension was also modified by a set of Koni shocks set at their softest rate, front springs tempered for rake and recalibrated for geometry. Each Macho Trans Am was numbered on the rear spoiler and side fenders. An individual number plaque was added to the center console to indicate that the car was modified by DKM Design as a new production car and given it's sequence production number. If you want to do a little research you will find road tests and track tests of the Macho Trans Am's in Hot Rod magazine July 1978, Motor Trend magazine June 1978, and Autoweek magazine February 3rd 1978. The Macho Trans Am could be ordered through Pontiac Dealerships throughout the United Staes or purchased directly through Mecham Pontiac in Phoenix, Arizona. The web is filled with reports, documents and articles of these rare and famous Firebirds. Any other questions can be answered by calling or email Rob Thomas 801-809-1371 UtahOn Nov-12-12 at 21:41:49 PST, seller added the following information: Good questions from bidders. Here are some answers. This would be a good driver. Most car guys love this one because of it's originality and rarity. It has the battle wounds of a Warrior. The dents on the trunk, speaker tray and broken T-Top were inflicted by Vandals. Someone tried to steal the car for the engine. These cars are well known here in Utah because many were sold new through Pontiac Dealerships. Thugs and criminals love stealing parts from them (functional Hood scoops, carbs, name plates, even engines)This car remains original. There is no rust around windows, I took the moldings off when windshield was replaced. Rear window is out also, ready to repair dented speaker tray. I have rear glass and all moldings. Utah is a dry state and the only rust we get is lower quarters and where water gets trapped. Radio and heater switch do not come on - power windows and locks Do work. Exhaust is good,it was replaced just before storing years ago. 4-Tube Hooker Headers with glasspak mufflers and dual exhaust but no chrome tips. I was going to restore this one and show it. The original Dealership who ordered these 4 Anniversary Editions is still in business selling GM cars and it would be good to get pics of it at it's original lot. But the bodyshop that I trust to paint and stripe Macho's, has put me off for 2 years now. It's time to let someone else enjoy this one. The other Macho in pics is #92 - that one and the others go to carshows only. I do know of 1979 #64 that you are asking about. They wanted $25,000 and it needed work. The price was too high and #126 is way more desirable and rare. I have tracked and hunted these rare birds for 30 years and even acquired the Mecham documents for all Macho's in 1978 and 1979 so that I can authenticate every Macho and verify VIN's and options. There are many clones and frauds, but this one is real and rare. Verified with documentation and history. These cars are not regular Trans Am's. Each was ordered unique and numbered new.On Nov-13-12 at 19:57:20 PST, seller added the following information: Next answer: Yes, I do know #90 Macho also on Ebay. I have owned 23 Macho's and that was one of them. I have known that car since it was 3 or 4 years old. She is a good driver and looks good. I can tell you lots of history on many of the Macho's. You are welcome to call anytime with questions or to verify originality or options of any Macho. On Nov-16-12 at 22:46:10 PST, seller added the following information: Next Answer: You are right about most Macho's being undervalued, but there are true collectors that do appreciate them and know that they will one day recieve high statis. The problem is the lack of knowledge about them. I sent #173 to Netherlands for $30,000 and it was just a nice driver just like #90 on Ebay right now. When it got to the Netherlands, the new owner said it was worth $60,000 American dollars there because of the rarity. #142 sold for $42,000 and it was a nice driver. The masses will never know these cars, there were just too few of them. I used to be able to buy 1969 Trans Am's here for $3000- $5000. I scoffed at one offered to me for $3800 because it was automatic on the column. It turns out 10 years later being worth $60,000 because of it's rarity. Pink and Purple Mopars used to be looked down on and look what eventually became of them. We are all enjoying the cheap phase of the Macho era, but one day it will end (unless the polititians kill our economy some more) and when these catch on, say goodbye to ever buying another one. Go try finding a Yenko, Baldwin Motion,Shelby or a Royal Bobcat Pontiac for $25k. These all were low priced at one time before they were found to be so unique and rare. All collectors know that the key is rarity, documentation, history and age. Cool History: Mecham Pontiac was owned by Evan Mecham- Governor of Arizona (most know of the televised scandals about him). Did you know Steve Saleen worked with Mecham Racing before going on to modify and race Saleen Mustangs? Did you know Dennis Mecham and John Delorean were friends? Mecham Racing was SCCA racing champions and developed the MSE Trans Am for Pontiac with their racing knowledge and background.Cool facts about history in the making. Nobody knows when these birds will take off, I'm just getting as many as I can and enjoying them... You can too... at least for now. ******
