With hesitation I’m selling my 1979 Mustang Cobra “Alternate” which is the rarest version of the 1979 Mustang Cobra. There were 17,579 “cobras” made in 1979, but only 938 were “cobra alternates” that were all black (not two tone) with green pin striping and black interior. I found out my car is one of the alternates by having a Marti Report prepared. The photos show orange striping but my plan was to have this redone with lime green for originality (the lime green kits can still be purchased). Also per my Marti Report, my car is 1 of 170 made with these paint/trim codes, and was one of the early cobras, produced on October 19, 1978. So truly, this is a rare cobra. Car features: First year of “fox body” mustang body style 154,000 miles 5.0L V-8 C-4 automatic transmission Power steering Console Houndstooth interior ORIGINAL!! Power disc brakes Factory a/c (but needs work) Rear window defroster Am/Fm stereo with cassette (stereo works great but cassette does not work) Original owners manual AND WINDOW STICKER, BUILD SHEET, AND BUCK TAG!!! Original LIKE NEW spare tire and jack I purchased this car back in 2007 and have been working on it, doing the following: Hood scoop (original) Body moulding (original except the pin stripe coloring) Rear hatch Ford and Mustang emblems “Cobra” decals on the doors New carpet Re-dyed interior plastics (professionally done) Replaced driver’s side door panel include OEM “Cobra” door emblems on both panels Driver’s side seat repaired (but the ORIGINAL houndstooth fabric is completely original and untouched) New alternator and new starter New 5.0L emblems on front fenders New heater hoses Minor rust repairs on floor pans General cleanup I’m the 3rd owner – I bought it from a gentleman near Memphis, TN who purchased it from his friend who bought it new. The 2nd owner did the following modifications, but the car is mostly original: New paint (original Ford black) Bored 30 over (if memory serves me) with mild Crane Cam Hedman headers with flowmaster dual exhaust Edelbrock intake and 4 barrel carburetor Shift kit (car has stock automatic transmission) Cobra style wheels and new tires Replaced driver's side door Chrome valve covers and air cleaner 373 posi rearend New headliner Cobra shaped emblems on front fenders (cool but not original for 1979) This car is registered as a historic vehicle so I have only driven it to shows and cruisins (and it has done well with several trophies including some first place trophies in its class). Only selling due to planned move. This car still needs some tweaks but turns heads every time I’m out. The car has some rust on part of the frame (passenger’s side) near engine compartment, and some in the rear especially under the back bumper that will need to be tended to eventually, but all repairable. Floor pans have both been professionally restored. Emergency brake cable needs replaced. Backup lights do not work. Rear driver’s side axle could use replacing. Car is extremely sharp for being 33 years old!
