Vehicle Detail
1978 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, naked, standard, used. Not road worthy. Complete, for parts, to restore, to mod, cafe, etc. I did start and run it. The fuel pump leaks so I bypassed it, hooked a temp fuel supply to the carbs, threw on some jumper cables (the battery is shot) and started it up. It runs, in fact It runs fairly strong. The Jardine exhaust sounds pretty impressive. Lots of smoke at first but no knocks. It shifts through the first couple of gears OK -- hard to ride much faster with a temporary fuel tank hanging on the side. . . the brakes work. Here is a link to some youtube video I posted of this bike running: http://youtu.be/l25e_9p_fjs Or, if that link doesn't work, do a youtube search for "1978 Goldwing GL1000 start-run" my youtube name is ericmark100. The clutch seems to slip, but I haven't bothered to see if it's an adjustment issue or if it's just shot -- I'd go with shot if I had to guess. A compression check dry/wet shows 120/140, 120/140, 120/140, 100/100 -- looks like a burned or possibly stuck valve on #4. The original owners manual has a note about a weak #4 from some time back so probably it's burned. The frame is rusty where the center stand mount is welded on -- if you put it up on the center stand both wheels still sit on the ground -- not good. The seat is split. I did throw a digital voltmeter on it while it was running -- the charging system DOES seem to work -- it puts out about 14 v at 2500 or so rpms. There is some fiddly wiring from the battery to the starter solenoid but the rest of the harness looks to be intact and unmolested. I don't think this ever had a Vetter fairing on it to screw up the harness. The engine leaks fluid at every orifice. The lights work. The horn works, well the one that's there -- one horn is missing. The forks leak, naturally. The tires aren't bad, actually -- quite a few years old but not dry rotted -- yet. Still I wouldn't run them any distance or any speed. It looks to have original bars, switchgear, instruments and they all more or less work, though the tach is slow to respond. The grips are shot. Every bit of chrome is pitted badly. If you have a question about a specific item you would be safe to assume the specific item is bad, leaks, or needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Once again, this bike is not rideable in it's present condition. It will need to be hauled away. Over all, this is probably a good candidate for parting out but . . . I can't bring myself to do it. Anyway, the title is clear. The bike is sold as is where is. NO GUARANTEES OF ANY KIND ON ANY ASPECT OF THIS BIKE. No shipping but I will make every attempt to work with your shipper if you make all the arrangements and pay them. PayPal for deposit of $200.00 due within 48 hours of auction closing, balance in cash within 7 days of closing. The bike is located in Palmyra, VA 22963. (so am I)
