Vehicle Detail

This auction is for one of the rarest police squad cars ever built. A 1979 Dodge Aspen Police spec powered by one of the most powerful engines of the era-the 360 Magnum. Most police Diplomats and the much rarer Aspens, were powered by the 318. It is very, very unusual to locate a 360 powered squad car, especially an Aspen. This car is even more significant because, although a full police package Aspen, it was never equipped with a light bar, cage, spotlights or any other holes in the body. I was told by the previous owner that it was a federal car-possibly even an FBI undercover car. I have no way, currently, to verify this info but considering that the Aspen is powered by the 360, was never modified for pushbumpers, lightbars, etc(and that the Feds had a habit of procurring unusual and powerful units-like the legendary FBI Grand Nationals), its not that hard to believe. This Aspen is an E58 spec car with intact fender tag, the rare police package throttle stop, big sway bar, the impossible to find police certified speedometer, police wheels and dog dish hubcaps. Another great thing about this car is that it doesn't appear to have ever had any significant damage, nor does it have the very typical rust issues that plague many of these cars. It is amazingly free of rust. The Aspen drives well and runs very strong-especially for a car of this era-can't imagine there was ever a faster squad car built in 79 than a 360 Magnum powered, lightweight Aspen. The trans shifts firm and the car goes down the road well. Its also equipped with the police added oil pressure gauge. The floor pans, door jambs, engine bay and trunk are all still wearing their original paint. All the door stickers, vins and fender tags are in place. As far as I can tell all the lights and gauges work. The dash is in great condition and most of the original interior is nice. The Aspen is equipped with a nice dual exhaust with a crossover pipe. Of course, being an over 30 year old, ex-police vehicle, it is not perfect. The Aspen was repainted in a blue that is reasonably close to the original color. The paint is far from perfect and would probably be typical of the quick resprays used to paint old police cars to return them to civilian duty-painted over door dings and some overspray. The basic, heavy duty vinyl upholstery is torn in a few areas(most limited to the front seats). Ths should be an easy and inexpensive fix. The bumper chrome is very tired and should be replated-although the bumpers themselves are in good shape. Some of the external window rubbers, etc are dried out and cracked. The tires on the car, while usable, are wider than the original spec. The AC system is intact and complete, but doesn't blow cold. The car needs a carpet kit. As stated, the car has a dual exhaust. While it breathes much better with this system, there are not currently cats on the car and it would not be smog legal in California in its current state. It has also be converted back to Mopar electronic ignition, rather than the Lean Burn system. A Leanburn computer is attached to the air cleaner for a correct appearance, but isnt functional nor needed. None of these issues is very significant and could be resolved without much difficulty. The California registration is expired, but a clear title is on hand. The minor issues notwithstanding, the appeal of this car remains its incredibly rare status as a police vehicle that is just never seen. Aspens were rare, the 360 rarely ordered and as an unmarked squad-even more significant. This car would be a perfect addition to an emergency vehicle enthusiast's collection and would also be a fun book-end for someone with an Aspen R/T. Offered at no reserve, don't miss this one as you'll never see another. Good luck and thanks for bidding.
