Vehicle Detail
This steel bodied tribute to the Stutz Bearcat speedster racers is believed to have been built in the 1950's. It has a clear Michigan title, registration, and license. Little is known about the early history of this car, but I've traced it back to the estate of a Rolls-Royce in MA. This car is powered by a '50's GM inline 235 cubic inch 6 cylinder, coupled to a 3 speed manual transmission. Oil pressure runs between 40 -50 psi. Stopping power is provided by hydraulic drum brakes. The 6 volt electrical system has been upgraded to Halogen 6 volt bulbs, and charging is by a new Powermaster alternator encased in a generator style housing, ($600+). The battery is a new Ultima 6 volt ($135+). Much of the front suspension has been rebuilt to eliminate steering slop and shaking. The wheels are 19x550 on massive Buffalo style rims. The Smit is 160" in length and 68" in width. The ammeter gauge is currently non-functional and should be replaced. The actual mileage of the car is unknown. Compared to the usual Ford Model A or Model T speedsters, this is a much more powerful, reliable car, capable of highway speeds, and is much larger physically. The Smit cruises easily and smoothly at 50-55 mph. At speeds around 70 mph it begins to shake but I think that could be addressed by alignment or additional suspension work. In the 2 years we've owned this car I've driven it a few hundred miles to area car shows and it has won some trophies. I bought this car for myself and my son but he has indicated his preference in newer cars. I've run out of garage space and need to sell this to make room for winter projects and cover some upcoming parts costs. I'm not a dealer, just a car guy so there are no warranties or guaranties. The Smit is being sold in as-is, where-is, condition. I strongly urge you to come and inspect the car and for serious buyers we'll take it for a drive. You won't be disappointed. There is a medium quality video of the car driving on youtube if you search for 1939 Smit; I've tried listing the link here but I'm having trouble. I'll list the address later if I can. The quality of the audio and video is my fault not the cars. ( My first attempt at something like that). NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ORIGINAL STUTZ. It is a constructed tribute to those cars. I'm not really interested in trades. THIS IS A NO RESERVE AUCTION. The first person with a reasonable offer and the funds to back it up will own it. Frauds, cheats and scammers please pick on somebody else. Payment is to be in US funds. I accept PayPal, cash, US Postal money orders, and certified cashiers checks. A down payment of $500 is required within 72 hours of auction end. I'll sell only to the US or Canada. As soon as funds for payment in full clear, the vehicle and paperwork will be released, I've been as through and honest about the car as possible. If you have any questions just ask ( except what my reserve is, but make an offer, you never know, but I'm not going to give it away.) Depending on the interest in the car I might be persuaded to lower my reserve, and end the auction early. Ebay will not allow a make an offer on auction, only a fixed price listing. The car has been offered for sale locally and the auction may be ended early by Buy it now, an auction offer, or locally sold. Thanks for looking, and good luck bidding. On Oct-03-12 at 18:05:05 PDT, seller added the following information:I forgot to mention that I installed several hundred dollars of dress up items to the engine. I haven't added the total figure up but it is things like polished cast valve covers, side covers, and stainless steel covers. I'm still having trouble adding the link to the you tube video of the car running and driving, but if you go to to you tube and search for 1939 Smit speedster, you'll find it. Again the quality of the video and audio is my fault, first time I've attempted this sort of thing. This is a NO RESERVE auction as previously stated. It has been a couple of years since I've listed vehicles and Ebay's rules have changed. I intended to have an auction listing with a reserve, a Buy It Now, and make an offer option. Ebay wouldn't let me do that, so before I submitted the listing I changed it to a no reserve auction. I thought I deleted the references to that type of auction but I see I missed a reference to ending the auction early by making an offer. It looks like the only way I can do that is if somebody makes a high enough offer, then I could add a Buy It Now. Hope this clarifies things, Thanks for your interest. PS; In answer to a question from an interested party, This is an all-steel body. I have found no modern materials used in this car, no evidence of repairs, or corrosion. The floors are made of wood and the dash is a solid thick piece of oak or maybe mahogany? I would say this is a one-off car made in tribute to the Stutz Bearcats of an earlier era. I do not know where the 1939 Smit reference on the title is from. Thanks again.
