Vehicle Detail
Here is my 1968 IH Travelall, 1000C, 2 wheel drive. I bought this as a cool truck to haul my wife, four kids and the stuff that seems to go with them. We've had a great time with this truck and put a bunch of miles on it. The kids really like this one and always prefer this when asked what car to take, but we recently bought a vintage van so now the Travelall has to go. This 1000C has torsion bar independent front suspension, a rebuilt 345 V8 with a 4 barrell carburetor, T-18 four speed manual with a "granny" first gear, 3.54 rear gearing, extra capacity heater, dual gas tanks to hold a combined 33 gallons, power brakes, steering and rear tailgate window. The truck was purchased new in Santa Fe, New Mexico as a tow rig for a family with a travel trailer. About five years ago it was shipped to the east coast and now it serves as my semi-daily driver and family hauler. It still sports the original paint, although very thin and down to the primer in several places. Mechanically, the truck is outstanding. The engine was rebuilt and is very powerful and smooth. The front suspension and steering is tight and surprisingly accurate with new tie rods and strut rod bushings. The brakes are strong and consistent. The grill and headlight surrounds were stripped and polished last year along with the rechroming of the brake light rings. Cosmetically, the original paint still has a fair amount of shine. The body does have numerous dings, especially on the top of the hood. The paint on the top of the tail gate is scraped and worn down from a prior life of work and the chassis designation badges on the front fenders are missing. Also, the two gas caps are mismatched. The interior has no carpeting on the floors, the cardboard backing behind the door panels have been replaced with waterproof PVC backers, the front seat has been recovered while the second and third row seating was sourced from a late model minivan in order to accommodate my family. These seats easily unbolt and can be replaced with the original second row seating, which is included and still sports it's original upholstery in decent condition. The truck is comfortable and enjoyable to drive and cruises easily and at speeds in the 55 MPH range. Speeds above 60 MPH result in engine RPM's in the 3000 range so the majority of my driving is around town, boulevard type driving. This truck is very cool, tough and incredibly dependable. She starts easily, the choke sets correctly, drives well and sounds great through the dual exhaust. There are a few issues with the truck, which are relatively minor: the turn signal does not return after making a left hand turn, the gas gauge for the passenger side tank does not work however I still top off both tanks when refueling, the steering box weeps fluid but not enough to drip or require attention, and I get an oil drip from what appears to be the rear main seal. Overall, this is a fantastic truck that looks presentable, is fun to drive, incredibly dependable and more unique and capable than any station wagon.
