Vehicle Detail
Up for bidding is my 1982 VW Rabbit Pick Up. 152,700 miles on truck. 30,000 on engine. Original Lago blue paint on blue interior, equipped with a VW German made 1.6 naturally aspirated diesel engine, with an aftermarket turbo charger. Five-speed manual transmission. 40-50 MPG depending on driving habits. This is fun to drive, everything is tight and responsive. Also included is the original Snug Top brand fiberglass topper. I am the second owner of this clean, solid caddy. I purchased this caddy five years ago in southern California and had the following upgrades and maintenance performed as indicated below. The caddy currently resides at 9,000 feet in Colorado. I purchased a 1.6 naturally aspirated hydraulic lifter engine (from a 1986 VW Jetta) as a long block that was completely rebuilt by a diesel machine shop in Denver. I used the original injection pump, installed new water pump, new timing belt and tensioner and a used alternator. New engine mounts were used as well. Coupled is the original five-speed with a new Sachs clutch. I added the turbo to bring atmospheric conditions here more like that of sea level. The waste gate is currently set at a max boost of five P.S.I. with the ability to be adjusted. The engine and transmission are serviced with Amsoil products. The oil pan has a 120 volt AC heat pad permanently attached for use in extreme cold. The battery is an Interstate MT-41, four years old. This engine has a smokey start at cool to cold temperatures but once warmed up runs like a top! That said, this engine has never failed me even at sub zero temps. There is a minimal oil leak from the head gasket. This does not require the addition of oil between oil changes. Please keep in mind this caddy lives at altitude and will need the injection pump adjusted upon arrival at sea level. The aftermarket turbo kit included an aluminum intake manifold, cast iron exhaust manifold, stainless down pipe and the turbo charger. All of the plumbing to and from the turbo charger was custom fabricated. The air intake has a K and N air filter with PVC and metal connectors down to the turbo intake. The turbo bearing is plumbed with aluminum tubing and compression fittings. The oil is cooled in the same fashion as any VW turbo with a heat exchanger at the spin on oil filter location. The oil sump return is brass compression fittings with copper tube (see photo). The exhaust is high quality 2" pipe complete with a flex pipe below the turbo down pipe (see photo) and a Magna flow muffler. Some may say the exhaust is loud, others not. The Magna flow muffler was utilized for max exhaust flow to keep the MPG's high. The following have been replaced within the last 30,000 miles: Engine coolant, all cooling hoses, brake fluid, shifter linkage, axles, ball joints, clutch cable, under car shifter boot, front brakes (excluding calipers), rear brakes (excluding drums) hand brake cables, rear wheel bearings inspected and packed. The tires are German made winter Arctic Altimax 175/70/13 with less than 10,000 miles. This caddy is ready for its next hundred thousand miles but has blemishes you would expect from a 30 year old vehicle. The paint overall is in great condition but has a lot of rock chips. The whole body is solid. You will see some surface rust here and there. The front right bumper end cap is missing, someone decided to sit on the hood so there is a depression at center. The front left top of fender has multiple small dents. The headlight bucket rivets are broken. (new rivets and mounting hardware are included so the headlights may be adjusted properly). The passenger side pin striping has been removed. The windshield is pitted and has a couple small cracks, none have propagated. Windscreen wipers do not "park" but work fine otherwise. Kenwood CD player works at will, radio is fine. Rear lift struts on topper do not hold. There is no key for topper lock. The A/C receiver dryer and plumbing are intact. Evaporator, compressor and associated mounting hardware have been removed but are included in auction. Also included is the Bosch alternator and mounting brackets required for A/C operation. The A/C worked when removed. The interior is in decent shape though far from perfect. Have a look at the photos. The seats and shifter boot are torn. The dash has some cracking. The drivers door arm rest and door panel are torn. The ash tray tab is broken and therefore does not stay in place. Weather stripping in doors is in great shape. The wing windows are inoperative. The passenger side wing window is siliconed closed. The steering wheel is from a Scirocco and has a much better feel than the original. The headliner is currently removed but will be included in auction, it will need to be recovered. The vacuum solenoids are inoperative within the air system so only the defrost works. Heater is excellent. There is a pressure/vacuum line inside the vehicle if you wish to add a turbo boost gauge. Also included are: 1 Bentley service manual, original owners manuals, two original VW ignition keys and one glove box key. There is also a box of miscellaneous items.... relays, hardware, clutch alignment tool and two like new VW hub caps. I do have the original Brazil made solid lifter engine. This engine was in good running order when removed. The head was removed for inspection and the cross hatching is still visible on the cylinder walls.
