Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE 1971 Pontiac GT-37 Pontiac's advertising for the 1971 model year started with “If you’re after the response of a GTO, but you’re willing to sacrifice some of the frills, remember this simple code: GT-37.” The GT-37 was the low cost, light weight street brawler Pontiac first unleashed on the buying public in 1970 as an option code on the Tempest line. In 1971 it was a LeMans and available with any engine & transmission combination available to the GTO. Only 5802 units were built in 1971 with various engine combinations and those were broken into early & late models. The early models received two color “eyebrow” stripes similar to the Judge while the later models – those built March of 71 & later received the reflective “sword” stripes. It is believed that fewer than 100 of the later models with the sword stripe were produced, unfortunately those production numbers do not exist for confirmation. This Lucerne blue late model was built at the Fremont, CA plant the 4th week of March and shipped to Superior Pontiac in San Antonio, TX. The car remained in Texas until brought to Connecticut about 12 years ago. Spending so much time in Texas is what likely saved this car – the floors are amazingly solid and the trunk floor is as well. The car retains all of its original body panels although the quarters do seem to have a very small amount of body filler in them just behind the wheels on both sides and on the trunk lid lower lip. At some point in its past it received a repaint in the original color. Although still shiny and very presentable it is not perfect and has a few small blemishes. The bumpers are both shiny & straight but would need to be re-chromed to look perfect. The interior is perfect other than the dash which has a cap on it and the headliner has a couple of cuts in it but I'm including a complete reproduction headliner with the car that you can have installed at your leisure. I’m a huge fan of cars that look like they’ve just been pulled out of your grandfather’s garage, and this car has that look & feel – it’s an honest car that has been lovingly maintained but never fully restored. The car shows 71,000+ miles and still retains ALL of its born with drive-line. This is an important point with the confusing terms about numbers matching or correct parts that are carelessly thrown around these days. The original WU 350 CID engine, M-20 Muncie transmission and WF coded 10-Bolt 3:23 rear are all still in the car, as they were when it was first produced. The car drives hard & strong and delivers a no excuses ride. Its optioned with a vinyl bench seat interior, push button AM radio (not working), custom carpets, in-dash tach & gauges, power disc brakes, soft ray tinted glass and the all-important GT Option. The GT Option consisted of the GTO’s low-restriction dual exhaust system, G70-14 White Letter Tires, Rally II Wheels without the trim rings, hood hold down cables and pins, body colored sport mirrors with driver’s side control, the GTO rear valence panel with duel chrome exhaust splitters, vinyl body stripes and the GT-37 emblems on the front fenders & trunk lid. I’ve added the 15” honecomb wheels because the original 14” rally II’s were not with the car when I purchased it – plus I love the look! The car has recently had the brakes done including new rotors, pads and the front flexible brake lines. The radiator has been replaced and the clutch is new. I have ordered a reproduction set of the correct 71 Honeycomb center caps and those will be on the wheels before the end of the auction. The front and rear windows were recently removed, channels cleaned and re-sealed/installed and DO NOT LEAK, a new rear package tray cover was installed at that time. All of the controls including the heater, fan & defrost work the way they should, the dome light & key buzzer work and the tach and temp/oil pressure gauges work the way they should. The dash harness & engine harness are uncut and have not been monkeyed with. As noted before, the AM radio is not working & I have not looked at what may be causing that. Not many of these cars have survived so if you are the lucky next owner of this vehicle expect a lot of attention at shows. Although cruise nights and local shows will have a whole bunch of Camaros, Mustangs and Corvettes, you will likely be the only one there with a GT-37. Of the 901 rare & special Pontiac's at the POCI show this past Saturday in St. Charles there were only 2 GT-37's in attendance, one a red 70, and another late build Lucerne blue 71. This is a rare car that is a blast to drive and is about as exclusive as they come for a production Pontiac. This is a no reserve auction so bid to win. The opening bid is very fair for a car of this condition and quality. Please do not bid if you do not intend to purchase the vehicle - it is just a waste of your time and mine. $2,000 deposit paid via PAYPAL or bank transfer must be completed within 48 hours of auction end. Balance to be paid within 7 days from auction end and prior to pick up. Connecticut does not issue titles on vehicles built prior to 1981 so this will be sold with a bill of sale and the transferable registration form showing prior ownership. This vehicle is sold AS-IS and there are no express or implied warranties. If you would like to inspect this vehicle prior to placing a bid, please get in touch with me, I will be more than happy to make myself & the car available to you. Transportation can be arranged with any shipping company however I have had excellent experience with Reliable Carriers and would highly recommend them. I can also assist in delivery if you are within a day's drive but would need to charge for reasonable time & fuel costs – or you can just fly in, slap a plate on it and drive it home!
