Vehicle Detail

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME, PHS DOCUMENTED, RARE 4-SPEED, '68 GTO CONVERTIBLE THAT IS READY TO SHOW OR GO!! SEARCHING FOR AN INVESTMENT QUALITY GTO CONVERTIBLE THAT CAN ALSO BE DRIVEN AND ENJOYED? WOULD YOU PREFER A 4-SPEED? DO YOU WANT IT TO HAVE THAT THROATY MUSCLE CAR SOUND? DO YOU WANT IT TO HAVE ICE COLD A/C FOR THOSE HOT SUMMER RIDES? WOULD IT BE NICE IF IT HAD A HIGH END CD STEREO SYSTEM? IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO ANY OR ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS THEN YOU NEED TO KEEP ON READING BECAUSE YOU MAY HAVE JUST FOUND YOUR DREAM CAR! According to the Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) Documentation there were only 3116 1968 GTO Convertibles produced with the 400 2bbl and manual transmission. This is one of those 3116 originally produced and who knows how many still exist today. As you will see from the VIN # which starts with 242 this is a Real GTO and this is an original 4-speed convertible that was treated to a frame on professional restoration about 4 years ago. The restoration was done at a high end shop in Florida where this GTO spent a good part of its life. This GTO was restored to a very high level and was built to be driven and enjoyed as well as taken to the shows where it will win its share of trophies if that is your goal. The gentleman I acquired it from was a long time collector of all types of cars. His current collection included a Ferrari, '57 Chevy, '70 Chevelle SS, among others. He bought this sweet GTO about 2 years ago and with so many cars in his collection just never got the chance to drive it as much as he had hoped so he decided to thin the herd of classics since he just bought a Nissan GTR and needed some space in the garage. His loss is definitely going to be someone's gain! This GTO convertible is truly a top quality investment classic that drives like a dream and has some great features. I have personally driven and enjoyed this car and in fact recently drove it in 100 degree Atlanta heat and it performed beautifully and ran cool. I will do my best to provide enough pictures and videos and an honest description so you can decide if this is the right one for you!! Sit back and enjoy! The body on this '68 GTO Convertible is near flawless and the Solar Red Paint is truly show quality and almost looks wet as you will see in the pics. Often times you will hear people describe the paint job on their car as very nice but not a $10,000 show quality paint job. Well, this one has the $10,000+ show quality paint job on it. In fact I was told by the previous owner that the paint work that was done to this car cost closer to $15k. Keep in mind the frame on restoration was done about 4 years ago and the car was built to be driven and enjoyed and it was. Therefore, while it is still a show quality car I will not call it flawless. However, it is pretty darn close and is certainly still going to be one of the nicest '68 GTO Convertibles you will find and runs and drives as good as it looks!! The beautiful body lines on this GTO are extremely straight and it appears to be wearing its original sheet metal. Body panel fit is excellent including the large hood that many times you will see out of alignment on other GTO's. It did receive a color change at some point in its life from the original Flambeau Burgundy to the current Solar Red. The tiny flaws I noticed were a few tiny chips along the front nose area that have been professionally touched up and one small spot on the chrome of the rear passenger side bumper that has a flaw from the re-chroming that was done to it. The rest of the chrome trim and bright work looks excellent. The Endura front bumper looks great. This is definitely a GTO worthy of showing if that is what you enjoy but regardless it will turn heads everywhere you go and will draw crowds at the cruise-ins or anywhere you take it!! Here is a closer look at the body of this Red Beauty: You may have noticed that all of the pics so far have been with the top down. Hopefully that is how you will enjoy this awesome GTO Convertible but when the conditions require you to put the top up it is nice to know that the power top is in close to brand new, has the glass rear window and operates nicely up and down. Slide inside this muscle car and you will think you are back on the Pontiac showroom floor sitting inside a brand new '68 GTO. But wait, upon closer inspection you will see that this particular GTO Convertible also offers some of the creature comforts you might also want like a modern A/C system that will keep you super cool when needed as it operates on the new R12 Refrigerant. While there is no denying that this GTO makes its own sweet sounds from the dual exhaust, a very high end Eclipse Stereo System has been neatly installed and sounds fantastic. Dash and custom stereo enclosure have a great carbon fiber look. Factory in dash tach and speedometer all function properly. Additional gauges to help monitor oil pressure, temperature and voltage all work great and this car has been running cool even in this record breaking Atlanta heat. Black front bucket seats are firm and feel and look like new. I have placed a nice aftermarket console between the front buckets to provide cup holders and some storage. This can be removed if desired as it is just resting in place without any modifications. Rear seat looks great and there are front and rear seat belts. Carpeting, door panels, dash pad all look great. Original steering wheel still in great condition with just a few of the normal separations. Nice set of Custom 1968 GTO floor mats. Gauges, lights, blinkers, wipers etc all work correctly. Interior is as nice as exterior. Have a look: Under this Goats hood is a super strong, date code correct WT coded 400/350hp V8. I was told it was not the original numbers matching 400 but it is a date code correct WT motor that was rebuilt at the time of restoration and runs fantastic. The 400 V8 has an is mated to a smooth shifting Muncie 4-speed and rear wheel power comes from the 3.70 Posi trac rear. Power steering handles like a dream and front and rear suspension was all redone at time of restoration. Manual drum brakes were also completely gone through and stop this baby with ease. This GTO sounds so sweet....exactly as it should out the dual Flowmaster exhaust. Make sure you take a minute to listen to the car running in the video below. I cannot emphasize enough how well sorted out this car s mechanically and how great it runs and handles. This car glides along the road and is a blast to run through the gears. The engine bay is nicely detailed and quite original. Odometer reads a little under 68,000 miles however I do not have any documentation to support the low mileage. Regardless, there are probably less then 5000 miles since the restoration and the drivetrain is fresh and trouble free. The undercarriage and inside of the trunk are rock solid and appear to be original with no rust issues. Original Ralley II wheels look fantastic and are wrapped in Goodyear Eagle ST rubber. HERE IS A SHORT VIDEO SO YOU CAN HEAR THIS GTO RUNNING...TURN UP THE VOLUME AND CLICK THE ARROW TO VIEW! Hopefully you will agree that this is one sweet looking '68 GTO Convertible!!! This car truly looks as good in person as it does in the pictures and it is a real head turner! This will be a great investment that you can drive, enjoy and take to the shows if you want.
