Vehicle Detail

1984 Mercedes 280E- ONE OF A KIND, NEAR MINT Thank you for viewing my 1984 Mercedes 280e. Every now and then you find a true diamond like this beauty. This vehicle epitomizes the term “barn find”. This vehicle was placed into storage after the owner passed away and sat idle for several years. As you can see from the pictures, it is a true one of a kind and perhaps one of the nicest 280e Euro models around. Now the details: Interior: The interior is as clean as the day it rolled off the assembly line in Germany more than 28 years ago. The highly desirable black MB Tex seats have absolutely no wear, cracking, sagging or fading. The carpets are like new with the original floor mats. As it is a euro model, it is equipped with manual windows, sunroof and the every so rare rear headrests. The wood is in great condition with only a few areas where the laminate is pulling away; a little epoxy can take care of that. The dash has a few cracks which are covered by the new hard black dash cover. It still has the original Becker am/fm cassette deck. Look at the chrome sill plates in the front along with the burl wood horn pad! The rear deck lid behind the rear seats is like new. The headliner is mint with no tears, stains or fading. This vehicle is equipped with air conditioning which blows ice cold along with a fully functional heater. All gauges work including the clock. No surprises here; just a perfect example of a well engineered German cabin. Exterior: When I discovered the vehicle, it had been sitting in a large steel barn covered by several linen sheets. Upon unveiling it, I discovered a 100% rust free vehicle; I inspected under the doors, the trunk, the battery tray, behind each wheel. No rust anywhere!! There were maybe 2-3 small door dings. What I did discover was that the hood, roof and trunk had faded from the sun peering in from the top of the barn. I had a decision to make; keep it 100% original or bring it all the way back with the shine and gloss only know by Mercedes. I think the pictures illustrate my decision. This decision started a 3 month endeavor. Out of respect to the car and the care taken by the previous owner; I had to do it right. The paint was stripped down to the metal; yes, not a speck of original Astral Silver remained. All trim, handles, lights, bumper, mirrors and molding were removed. The vehicle was then cleaned, spayed with 3 coats of epoxy primer. Next, we sanded the primer and lay on 3 coats of 2k primer. Now was time for the base coat. The car was sprayed with 3 coats high quality original Astral Silver and 3 coats of clear. Today you are looking at what I would call a beautiful 8.5 out of 10 quality body and paint with absolutely zero scratches, dents, dings or fading. I replaced the anodized chrome with a more current trim package to give a cleaner, more modern and consistent appearance. I also added a few personal touches on the vehicle including the front end which can be easily changed or replaced with the original equipment. Mechanics: As I mentioned, the vehicle had sat for many years. Therefore, before I turned her over, I replaced all the fluids. The gas tank was rusted thus clogging the fuel system. Therefore, I replaced the tank, lines and filters. The plugs, wires and distributor were also replaced. Now she purrs with the familiar Singer sewing machine sound which the M110 engines are known for. This car still has the EGR! Disclosures: Let’s not forget the vehicle is nearly 30 years old. Therefore, I would like to share all known issues that I am aware of. I believe that honesty makes for a happy seller and a happy buyer so here we go: - The vacuum door lock system is not functional - The brakes intermittently get soft after long drives; may be a gasket or the master cylinder. I may repair if the buyer picks the vehicle up and has to drive it more than 100 miles. - Cruise control is not functional. Thanks again for viewing and good luck. This is one for the ages!
